w 0. HAWKINS.
I UALENDAR. No. 467,117. Patented Jan. 12, 1892.
'2 is a side view of the same.
NITED STATES JATJENT FFICE.
WVILLIAM C. HAW'KINS, OF TAUNTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO JOHN T. HAWKINS, OF SAME PLACE.
CALENDAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 467,1 1'7, dated January 12, 1892.
Application filed December 6, 1890. Serial No. 373,825- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM G. HAWKINS, of Taunton,-in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Calendar, which invention is fully set forth and illustrated in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
There are in common use calendars made up of twelve leaves, each printed on one side in a calendar-table for one month, the leaf of the past month being torn off as the month expires, exposing to view the table for the succeeding month. In such calendars tables for the coming months may be consulted by reference to the leaves remaining; but the leaves for the past months, being torn ofi, cannot be so consulted.
It is the object of this invention to provide in such a tear-oft calendar opportunity for consulting one or more of the past months or one or more coming months, or both, by printing auxiliary tables on each leaf in addition to the table for the current month.
The invention will first be described in detail, and then particularly set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a face view of a calendar constituting this invention, the leaves being printed in two calendar-tables in such order that a table for the past month will appear on each leaf in conjunction with the table for the current month, the leaves in this case being secured to a card backing in a well-known way. Fig. Fig. 3 is a face View of a modified form of calendar constructed without a card backing and exhibiting on each leaf, in addition to the table for the current month, distinguished by size or position or otherwise, auxiliary tables for the month last past and for the month next ensuing. Figs. 5 and 7 are face views of other forms of this calendar, the leaves being attached to a card backing in Fig. 7, but having no such card attachment in Fig. 5, and printed on each leaf with auxiliary tables for the two months last past and the two months next ensuing, in addition to the main table for the current month, the latter being distinguished by position and size or otherwise, as may be desired. Figs. 6 and 8 are respectively side views of Figs. 5 and 7.
In said figures the several parts are respectively indicated by reference-ni'imbers as follows:
The number 1 indicates the card, to which the leaves are secured by stitching or other means on a line 2, the leaves being perforated by the stitching or otherwise on that line, so as to be readily torn off. In Figs. 3, 4, 5, and 6, made without cald'backs, the leaves are stitched or secured together and perforated on the line 2 in a similar manner.
The numbers 3 indicate printed leaves, (shown in the side views 2, 4, 6, and 8 more open than as used in practice, in order to show them the more clearly,) it being understood that in practice said leaves lie flat and close together and to the card when'so attached.
In all the face views their respective fig- 7o ures exhibit the month of January, 1891, .as the current month, the remaining leaves in each case being printed in the proper order and number of tables to carry out the same purpose through the twelve months of the year. Thus in Fig. 1 the tables for the next month will be for February, 1891, at the top, and January, 1891, at the bottom, and for the last month of the year the table for December, 1891, at the, top and November, 1891, at the bottom, in which way the past month may always be consulted without disturbing the leaves of any coming month and any coming month be consulted by reference to other leaves.
In Fig. 3 the next leaf Will contain a table for February, 1891, in the center, the table for January, 1891, at the uppercorner, and a table for March, 1891, on the lower corner, and for the last month of the year a tablefor December, 1891, in the center, a' table for November, 1891, in the upper corner, and a table for January, 1892, in the lower corner, in which way either a table for the month last past or the month next ensuing may always be consulted without disturbing the calendar.
In Fig. 5 the next leaf will display a table for February, 1891, in the center, a table for December, 1890, in the upper left-hand corner,
a table for January, 1891, in the lower lefthand corner, a table for March, 1891, in the upper right-hand corner, and a table for April, 1891, in the lower right-hand corner, and for the last month of the year a table for December, 1891, in the center, a table for O0- tober, 1891, in the upper left-hand corner, a table for November, 1891, in the lower left hand corner, a table for January, 1892, in the upper right-hand corner, and a table for February, 1892, in the lower right-hand corner.
In Fig. '7 the next leaf will exhibit a table for February, 1891, in the center, a table for December, 1890, at the left-hand upper corner, a table for January, 1891, at the righthand upper corner, a table for March, 1891, at the left-hand lower corner, and a table for April, 1891, at the right-hand lower corner, and for the last month of the year a table for December, 1891, in the center, a table for November, 1891, in the upper right-hand corner, a table for October, 1891, at'the upper lefthand corner, a table for January, 1892, at the lower left-hand corner, and a table for February, 1892, at the lower right-hand corner.
In the arrangement of the calendar-tables on the leaves spaces for ornamentation or advertising purposes may be left upon the leaves, as in Fig. 3,0r said tables may be designed to cover the entire leaf below the line 2, as in Figs. 1, 5, and 7, and ornamentation or advertising be resorted to upon other areas of the leaves, as in the space 4:, Fig. 5, or in the margins of the cards in the usual way when constructed as in Figs. 1, 2, 7, and 8.
I do not herein broadly claim a calendarstrip having printed thereon, in addition to a calendar-table for the current month, one or more tables for the months last past and one or more tables for the months next ensuing, as such construction is shown and claimed in another application filed by me on the 23d dayof January, 1890, bearing the Serial No. 356,509.
I do not confine myself to the specific arrangement or number of calendar-tables to be printed on the calendanleaves, nor do I confine myself to a uniform arrangement of tables on the leaves of the calendar for a given year, as this matter may be varied indefinitely for any given year, or the scheme for difierent years may be varied indefinitely, as may be desirable, without departing from the gist of this invention.
Having thus fully described my said invention, I claim- 1. A calendar consisting of a series of leaves secured together and provided with a tearin line, having printed on one face of each leaf, in addition to a calendar-table for the current month, one or more tables for the months last past and one or more tables for the months next ensuing, one set or both, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. A calendar consisting of a series of leaves secured together and provided with a tearingline, having printed on one face of each leaf, in addition to a calendar-table for the current month, distinguished from the other tables, (as by s ze, position, or otherwise,) one or more auxiliary tables for the months last past and one or more auxiliary tables for the months next ensuing, one set or both, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
A calendar consisting of a series of leaves secured together and provided with a tearingline, having printed on one face of each leaf, in addition to a calendar-table for the current month, one or more tables for the months last past and one or more tables for the months next ensuing, one set or both, in combination with a suspension or advertising card thereto attached, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
