ooono UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROLAND EDGAR \VOODWARD, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
INHALER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 466,718, dated January 5, 1892.
Application filed September 19, I 890. Serial No. 365,503. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROLAND EDGAR W001)- WARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the -county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Apparatus for Medicating Atmospheric Air, of which the following is a specification. My invention relates to improvements in what is known as an inhaler used for medicating atmospheric air with remedies used in the treatment of disease of thehuman system, especially of theair-passages,th roat and In ngs; and the objects of my improvements are, first, to provide suitable jars in which the remedies or medications are placed and through which air passes and receives its first medication; second, a chamber into which the air thus medicated is passed and dried by means of heat; third, cups or small chambers are provided upon each side, into which the air thus medicated is passed by means of pipes connecting with the said heating-chamber. In these cups the air receives its final medication from other remedies placed therein and passes into tubes, from which it is inhaled. I attain these objects by the arrangement of the same illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figures marked a a show an elevation of the jars, their sides and bottoms perforated to allow passage of air, the bottoms of the jars being movable, so that the medication can be placed therein.
1) b are pipes leading from the jars into the drying-chamber 0, supported upon iron feet resting upon two bars secured to the jacket by a burner d.
or outer casing jj. The chamber is heated From this chamber the dry medicated air passes through pipes e 6 into cups ff, where it receives a final medication and passes into tubes g g, which are provided with small round balls for valves at "u t" v c. From these tubes the air thus medicated is inhaled through mouth-pieces 7t 7t. I
h it represents a shell or casing of iron extending over the top and sides of the dryingchamber 0 and projecting below it to retain the heat within the space between the casing 71, hand the drying-chamber c. The casing rests upon the bars before mentioned, which support the drying-chamber.
jj is an outer jacket or covering of the apparatus.
Having fully described my apparatus, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In an apparatus for medicating and inhaling, the combination of jars 0,, having perforate sides and movable bottoms, with the drying-chamber c, heated at its bottom by burner (Z and connected to the tops of said jars by means of pipes b, the top of said chamber also being, connected by pipes e with medicated cups f, having removable tops and connected by pipes g with inhaling mouthpieces k, for the purpose substantially as described.
