UNITED STATEs PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES VOOD CARVER, OF lPAVVLET, VERMONT, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO GEORGE II. CARVER, OF NATIONAL CITY, CALIFORNIA.
`SIGHT FOR FIRE-ARMS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 466,599, dated-January 5, 1892. Application filed January 29, 1891. Serial No. 379,595. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom/ it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES WOOD CARVER,
a citizen of the United States, and residing at Pawlet, in the county of Rutland and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sights for Fire-Arms, of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act specification.
The present invention constitutes an improvement on Patent N o. 404,598, granted to me on June 4, 1889; and it consists, essentially, of means for adapting the base of a sight to lit any make of gun. I use similar means to those shown in the above patent for regulating the sight, so that it will occupy a vertical position even in cases Where the sight is attached to the inclined portion of the gunstock, and l also provide an improvement on the aforesaid sight by placing therein a pendulum provided with a peep-hole, suspended by a small knife-edged rod. The use of the said pendulum enables the marksman to plumb the gun, which is very essential in target. and other practice. In a modification I also show another way of constructing my regulating device and means of attaching the spring to the under side of the base-plate for keeping the upright bar in a vertical position after the same has been adjusted.
In the drawings, Figure l is a front elevation of a gun-sight. Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof. Fig. 3 is a plan View of the base-plate. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view representing a modilication of my said invention. Fig. 5 is a detail View of the sightpendulum.
' The base A is adapted to be attached upon the gunstock by means of screws passed through the elongated slots B and thence into the gunstock. Said base is provided with a ,transverse groove C for the reception of the transverse slide D, and there is an adjustingscrew E, similar to that used in the aforesaid patent, to facilitate accurate adjustments, and there are jaws F upon the transverse slide D and a central joint-piece Gr, through'which the hinge-pin II passes, so that the sight can be swung upon this hinge-pin and turned down against the gun or brought up vertically.
The sight I is constructed in the following manner: The face of the front half is made' csaid bar, the said spring exert-ing concave, having the usual peep-hole u., and the opposite side is made hollow, as shown in Fig. 2, and havinga small round hole for the reception of one end of the knife-edged rod b,the said rod having suspended to it the pendulum c. The rear half ot' the sight also has the peep-hole continued and a small round hole adapted tol engage the other end of the pendulum-suspending rod b. A continuation 6o in the shape of a threaded tube is formed on the back plate for use in screwing the sight to the upright rack-bar J. The height of the t sight is regulated by the rack d and pinion e, as shown in Fig. 2.
I also show in Fig. 4 a modified construction of rack and pinion, wherein, instead of placing` the pinion on the outer side of the hollow cylindrical support Q, I form the rack on one side of said support and attach the 7o pinion to the upright bar J. The bar J has a scale marked on one or the face-side thereof. The bar is also provided with a set-screw K, which passes out through the slot L in the cylindrical support, for the purpose of fastening the bar after it has been adjusted to the desired position. In the modification the base-plate has a longitudinal slot M in its center. An L-shaped spring N is adjusted at the under side of the base-plate by means 8c of a screw P, and the short arm of spring N is adapted to project upwardly through the slot M. The long arm of spring N has a longitudinal slot in it for the reception of the screw P, which secures the spring to the base-plate. Slots M and O being of sufficient length, the spring will engage with the usual groove in the hinge, securing any desired vertical adjustment.v A tension-springf is shown in dotted lines adj usted at one end to the upright bar J 9o andlying in a groove cut longitudinally along pressure against the cylindrical support Q, and thereby holding the bar J in position While the setscreW is being applied.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire' to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. A gun-sight base having a longitudinal slot at both ends for adjustment to any gunroo stock, substantially as specified.
2. In a gun-sight, the combination, with the of a longitudinal slot in said base, an L-shaped spring provided with a longitudinal slot in its long arm for attachment to the under side of the base by a screw, and with its short arm extending upwardly through the slot in the base, substantially as described and shown.
4. The new pendulum eye-sight, consisting of two separate plates connected together, each provided with corresponding peep-holes and having a space between them in which a pendulum, also provided with a peep-hole, swings, and a knife-edged rod journaled within the said rod carrying the pendulum,
i eye-piece 7 laterally within which is adapted to swing the eye-piece.
5. The combination, with an eye-piece for gun-sights, of a pendulum suitably adjusted within said eye-piece and adapted to swing laterally, the said pendulum being provided with a peep-hole to correspond with the peepholein the eye-piece,substantially as described and shown.
6. In a gun-sight, the combination, with eyepiece I, formed of two plates and having peepholes a, together with knife-edged rodb, suitably adjusted in the two plates of the eyepiece, and pendulum c, suspended from rod b and provided with the peep-hole, substantially as described and shown.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this l/ith day of January, 1891.
