Description

(No Model.)
W. A. STONER. DEVICE FOR-RAISING AN'D MOVING HEAVY BODIES.
No.466g585. Patented Jan. 5, 1892.
UNITED STATES,
ATENT FFICE.
WVILLIAM A. STONER, OF ENGLEVVOOD, ILLINOIS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 466,585, dated January 5, 1892. Application filed September 25, 1891. Serial No. 4:06.784. (No model.)
ers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to devices for raising and moving stoves and other heavy articles;
The obj ect of the invention is to provide an elevating-platform of peculiar construction which may be mounted on casters or wheels and placed under the article to be moved, and
by a simple movement the article may be raised from the ground and transported with perfect ease.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the inven tion. Fig. 2 is a perspective 'view of a part of the invention used for operating the lifting portion of the invention. Fig. 3 is also a perspective View of a shaft used in connection with the part in Fig. 2.
A rectangular carrying-frame composed of the rods or beams A A is mounted on casters, as shown, and inside of same are placed two rods B B, one at each side and parallel with the sides of thesaid frame A A.
Between the rods A and B of the frame and near the extreme corners thereof are set the blocks a a, between which are allowed to slide the uprights O O, which are rigidly secured to a lower frame E E. Upon the upper ends of these upright rods rests a platform D D, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 1. A shaft F, having its bearings in boxings K J N N, is placed on top of the main frame A A B B, as shown. The ends of two wires or ropes Q Q are fastened to an end rod of'the frame E E, and, rising erpendicularly, passes over a rod 0, secured between the frame-bars B B, immediately over the said rod E. Then the said wires are fastened to the shaft F, as shown, thence pass over the rod 0 at the other end of frame and down to the bar E at that end. The said shaft F is cut off within the boxing K,-and the end thereof is formedinto a square designed to engage with a square hole or socket in a shaft G, which forms an extension to the shaft F. The object of this construction is that when the device is' being placed under any article to be raised or moved that the said shaft G may be taken off out'of the way. When the said shaft Gis placed in connection with the shaft F, it is held in position by the catch I, which sets into a slot G, cut in the periphery of said shaft G, and a crank or wrench H is provided to assist in the operation.
The operation of the device is as follows: When the device is to be placed underabody for moving, the shaft G may be removed, if necessary, by lifting the catch I and withdrawing the said shaft from the boxing. Afterward the said shaft is replaced and the wrench or crank turned in a direction oppo site to the motion of the hands of a clock (or to the left in this case,) and thereby the wires Q Q are drawn up and wrapped around the shaft F, and of course they raise the frame E E, with the upright bars 0 C and platform D D, as also the body resting on the said platform. A pawl M and a ratchet L serve to sustain the weight of the body after raising it from the ground; also, the whole apparatus may be raised by the bolts T, which screw down through the body of the casters S, the upper end of the said bolts T being simply allowed to turn freely in the frameAA without binding. A wrench is placed on the squared portion Uin the bolts T and thereby the purpose is accomplished.
I claim-- 1. In adevice for raising and moving heavy bodies, the main frame composed of the bars A A B B, the blocks a a, held between the said bars A B, the casters S, shaft F, with the wires Q Q, and the rods 0 O, in combination with the frame composed of the bars E E, supporting the upright bars 0 O and platform D, sub stantially as herein set forth and described.
2. In adevicefor raising and movinghczwy E E, supporting the upright bars 0 C and 10 bodies, the main frame composed of the bars platform D, as herein set forth and described. A A B B, with the shaft F journaled thereon, In testimony whereof I affix my signature in 0113 end of shafgl; being provided with a pawl presence of two Witnesses. 5 an ratchet, an said shaft being adapted to v T engage with a shorter shaft G within the box- WILLIAM 5 1 0} ing K and said shaftGbeing held therein by Witnesses: the catch I, and the wires Q Q, in combi- JOHN N.
