M. GADBERRY. NECK YOKE.
'Patented Jan. 5, 1892.
V 6 777677963 galn@ A rg @APlQzyS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MERRL GADBERRY, OF LEON, vKANSAS.
N ECK-YOKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 466,406, dated January l, 1892.
u Application filed June 4, 1891. Serial No. 395,101. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MEREEL GADBEEEY, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Leon, in the countyof Butler and State of Kansas, have invented a new and Vuseful Neck-Yoke, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in y neck-yokes.
, struction upon which lines might become entangled, and which will present a neat appearance and Will be devoid of noise and rattle.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a neck-yoke constructed in accordance with this invention and shown applied to a tongue or pole tip. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the coupling-block. Fig. 5 is a similar View of the pole-tip.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1
designates a neck-yoke having centrally se,
cured to its upper and lower faces plates 2 and 3, and the latter is arranged on the bottom and is provided with an integral depending pivot 4, on which is arranged a couplingblock 5,whicl1 connects in the neck-yoke with a tongue or pole tip 6. The plates 2 and 3 are transversely curved and conform to the coniiguration of the neck-yoke, and the coup-v ling-block is secured to the pivot of the lower plate by a disk 7 and the lower end of the pivot is upset against the disk. The coupling-block 5 is cylindrical and is .provided with a vertical opening 8 to receive'rthe pivot 4, and it has its upper and lower faces flattened and it is provided with a rearwardly-extending stem 9, which is arranged in the longitudinal opening or bore 10 of lthe tongue or pole tip 6. The pole-tip 6 is tapering, and is provided in its interior with an annular shoulder 11, which is engaged by oppositely-disposed lugs 12 of the stem 9 to secure the coupling-block to the pole-tip 6, and the latter is provided with oppositely-disposed grooves 13, which permit the passage of the lugs 12to-enable the stem to be inserted in the socket of the pole-tip, and after being inserted the stern is given a half-turn to bring the lugs into engagement with the annular shoulder. The neck-yoke is arranged at the end of the tongue and the latter does not project forward and provide an obstruction to catch the reins, and it is impossible for the neck-yoke to become accidentally detached from the pole or tongue, as it would have to assume a vertical position in order to become separated. The coupling permits a vertical and horizontal oscillation to enable the neck-yoke to yield to uneven roads and to prevent the parts being strained when horses of different sizes are employed. The coupling-block is provided on its rear or inner end with an annular flange 18, which is concentric with the stem 9, and which forms an annular groove to receive the front end of the pole-tip.
1. The combination of the neck-yoke, the bottom plate secured to the neck-yoke and provided With a pivot depending from' the lower face of the neck-yoke, the pole-tip having a socket and provided with an annular shoulder and oppositely-disposed grooves, and the coupling-block arranged on the pivot and located below the neck-yoke and provided with a stem arranged in the socket and having voppositely disposed lugs, whereby said neck-yoke lWill have a vertical swing at the end of the pole-tip and a horizontal oscillation or swing above the pole-tip, substantially as described. l
2. The' combination of the neck-yoke provided with a depending pivot, the couplingblock arranged on the pivot and located below the neck-yokev to permit the neck-yoke to have a free horizontal oscillation and pro- IOO vided with a stem, a pole-tip arranged in the same plane as the coupling-block and having :i socket to receive the stem, whereby the neck-yoke is also permitted a Vertical oscilla- JLion or swing, and the Iiauge 18 on the bleek to t over the end of the pole-tip, substan- Jnially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto axed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MERREL GADBERRY.
