' LAMP.
SIECIFIOATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 466,029, dated December 29, 1891.
Application filed May 10, 1888. Serial No, 273,489. (No model.) 7
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, GEORGE XV. BROWN and ALVIN TAPLIN, both of Forestville, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to Argand lamps.
The improvement consists in novel means, hereinafter described and claimed, providing for the insertion, removal, and adjustment of the wick of such a lamp.
Figurel of the drawings represents a central vertical section of the reservoir or upper portion of the body and the burner of a lamp embodying our invention. Fig. 2 represents a central vertical section of the upper part of the body or reservoir with an outside view of the wick-holder and wick. Fig. 3 represents a horizontal section of the removable cap and collar in the line 00 ac, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in the several figures.
A designates the reservoir or upper part of the lamp-body, having an open neck a of a diameter considerably larger than the exterior of the wick. To this neck is removably fitted and secured a cap B, to which are firmly secured the outer wick-tube b and the chimney-collar c.
In the center of the reservoir or body A is fixedly secured the inner wick-tube (Z. The cap B may be secured to the reservoir by means of a ribfthereon, engaging a groove g upon a neck a.
D designates the circular holder for holding the wick E, consisting of a metal ring, Within which the wick at any portion of its length may be securely held. To one side of this holder D is firmly secured an upwardlyprojecting handle D, which is slightly olfset from the holder that it may pass up and down a short distance outside of and clear of the outer wick-tube b. The said handle is represented as consisting of a rod which is thin and substantially fiat but corrugated transversely on its sides to give a good hold to the thumb and finger for manipulating th wick-holder.
In the crown of the removable cap B there is provided an aperturee of a form and size sufficient for the free upward and downward passage through it of the handle D of the wick-holder. This aperture 6 is represented as constructed of a flat tube 6', which is closely fitted within an opening of corresponding form within the crown of the cap, the said tube forming a substantial guide for the handle D. The handle D projecting upward through the aperture 6 in the cap B enables the wick to be adjusted by taking hold of the said handle and moving it up or down. The cap B can be removed from the reservoir or body A without disturbing the wick-holder, as the tube 6 is free to pass upward over the top of the handle D. WVhen the cap has been removed, the wick-holder, with the wick attached, may be drawn up through the open neck CL of the lamp body or reservoir and the holder and wick may be replaced by passing them down over the stationary internal wick-tube d. The cap B may be replaced without disturbing the wickholder or wick.
hat we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In an Argand lamp, the combination, with the reservoir provided with an opening upon its upper side, of a removable cap fitting said opening and providedwith an aperture upon its upper side, a eentral-dratt flue formed by the inner wall of the wick-tube, a wick, a wick-ring, an dawick-raiserextending through the aperture in said cap and so constructed that the cap may be moved freely to pass it off from and over the upper end of the wickraiser, substantially as specified.
