To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN GREEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reuovo, in the county of Clinton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Bases for Fencelosts; and I do hereby declare the-following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My present invention relates to fences, and has for its object an improvementin metallic bases for fence'posts, which will be hercinafl ter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, I have shown the best form in which'I have contemplated G111- bod yin gmy invention and in said drawings- Figure 1 is a perspective view; Fig. 2, a side elevation, and Fig. 3 a vertical section.

Reference being had to the drawings and the letters thereon, A indicates a metallic base for fence-posts of my improved construction, which consists of a web or guide B, reduced in thickness from the upper end to the point, as shown in Fig. 3, and pointed or V- shaped at its lower end a. In the body of the web B is a slot 7), into which a key 0 is inserted when the base is sunk in soft soil; but in hard soil the key may be omit-ted, as the soil in such condition will fill and pack in the slot, and at the upper end of the web is a head D, which may be cylindrical in form, as shown, or of any other desired configuration, and is provided with a socket c, to receive a bar of iron, (not shown,) upon which force is expended to drive the base into the ground and subsequently the metallic or wooden extensions-o1" a fence, arbor, or other construction.

The web l3 extends well up the sides of the head, as shown at (Z (I, and forms an effectual brace on each side thereof, and through the upper end of the head is an aperture e, to receive a cotter-pin (not shown) to secure the fence post or other structure in the socket of the base.

On each edge of the web 13, and preferably parallel with each other, are sides or flanges E E, which extend on both sides of the web and form pockets F F, in which the soilis firmly packed as the base is driven into the ground. The lower ends of the sides E are also pointed or V-shaped, and the point of the angle of the sides terminates at the up per end of the angle of the pointed portion of the web to resist the action of frost raising the post out of the ground, and the edges ff of the sides are sharpened 'to cut turf, roots, and soil as the base is being driven.

The junctures of the sides E with the web 13 are strengthened by fillets g, and thelower end of the head D is pointed to facilitate driving. 'lheV-shaped ends of the sides and the V-shaped end of the web, being at right angles, form a complete guide and resist the tendency of the post being deflected out of a perpendicular line by encountering hard substances while being driven.

Before driving the base it should be coated with coal-tar, asphaltum, or similar substance to resist corrosion.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is 1. A metallic base for fence-posts, consisting of a central web pointed at its lower end, and right-angled sides or flanges on the edges of the web extending to the pointed portion thereof and forming rectangular pockets on both sides of the web and a socket in the upper end.

2. A metallic base for fence-posts, consisting of a central web pointed at its lower end and provided with a slot in the body thereof, and sides or flanges on both edges of the web, said sides being V-shaped at their lower ends and the points on the sides terminating at the upper end of the pointed portion of the web.

A metallic base for fenceposts, consisting of a tapered web having a V-shaped lower end, parallel sides or flanges on the edges of the web and extending to the V-shaped portion thcreot and forming rectangular pockets nearly the length of the base and having V- shaped ends at right angles to the vertical. plane of the web and sharpened edges on said sides, and a head provided with a socket.
