GAR COUPLING.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE- \VILLIAM HINTZ AND ADOLPH I-IINTZ, OF NORTH AMHERST, OHIO.
cAR couPLme.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 465,267, dated December 15, 1891.
Application filed June 17,1891. Serial No. 396,597. (Noniodeh) To aZZ whom it may concern;
Be it known that we, WILLIAM HINTZ and ADOLPH HINTZ, of North Amherst, in the county of Lorain and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Link Car-Couplers; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to improvements in link car-couplers; and it consists in certain features of construction and in combination of parts hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In theaccompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a draw-head embodying our invention, port-ions being broken away to show the internal construction. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the draw-head in central section with the link coupling-pin and locking-bar shown in position. Fig. 3 is ahorizontal section on line :20 00, Fig. l.
A represents the draw-head, having a liaring chamber A for receiving the couplinglink B and having a vertical hole for receiving the coupling-pin C. An inclined recess a communicates with chamber A at the rear end of the latter, in which recess operates the gravity locking-bar D. Recess a is of such inclination that when the coupling-pin is sufficient-ly elevated bar D will descend by gravity until the end of the bar extends so far under the coupling-pin as to block or lock the pin in the elevated position, (shown approximately in Fig. 1,) in which elevated position of the pin the link B may enter chamber A.
below the line of the coupling-pin. Bar D has a lateral pin d projecting, preferably, on both sides of the bar, the protruding ends whereof operate in grooves a, that extend along the side walls of recess a, and the lower end walls of the grooves byen gaging the protruding ends of pin cl constitute stops to limit the forward and downward movement of bar D. This bar has also a depending lip or member (1'. adapted to engage the incoming link, by which engagement barD is snubbed back so as to release the coupling-pin, whereupon the latter descends by gravity and fastens or couples the link. The inner surface of the lower wall of the draw-head is provided with a groove adapted to receive the tilting bail E, so that this bail in its normal or depressed position is flush with or a little below the surrounding surface of the draw-head, and in its normal position does not interfere with the link entering chamber A, even if the link in so doing should ride on the bottom wall of the draw-head. This bail is rigidly mounted on a lateral axial pin E, this pin extending out through lateral holes in the side wall of the draw-head, and on at least one end of this pin next outside the drawhead is mounted an arm or lever e, by manipulating which the free end of the link may be raised and held in proper position to enter the chamber of an opposing draw-head. (See dotted lines, Fig. 2.)
What we claim is 1. The combination, with the draw-head of a coupler, said draw-head having an approximately vertical hole adapted to receive a coupling-pin, of a gravity-bar constructed to slide into position to form a seat for the pin when elevated, the forward end of this gravity-bar conforming approximately in shape with the pin, and a lateral pin working in a slot for limiting the downward slide of the gravity-bar, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination,with adraw-head having a hole formed vertically therein for the coupling-pin, the floor of the draw-head having a groove formed'therein around the hole, of a rock-shaft having a bail thereon, the latter encircling the hole formed for the pin and adapted to enter the groove in the floor of the draw-head and extend flush with the latter when depressed, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof we sign this specification, in the presence of two witnesses, this 18th day of May, 1891.
WILLIAM HINTZ. ADOLPH HINTZ.
