J. CHRISTESEN. APPARATUS FOR PREVENTING HORSES FROM GRIBBING.
No. 464,854. Patented Dec. 8,1891.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN CI-IRISTESEN, OF HAVERHILL, MASSACHUSETTS.
APPARATUS FOR PREVENTING HORSES FROM CRIBBING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters latent No. 464,854, dated December 8, 1891.
Application filed March 13, 1891- Serial No. 384,911. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN CHRISTESEN, a subject of the King of Denmark, residing at Hav' erhill, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and use ful Improvement in Apparatus for Preventing Horses from Oribbing, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
Horses known as cribbers are usually in very poor condition, by reason of their losing the grain out of their months when they open it to seize the crib. Thus the grain is wasted and the horse impoverished.
The object of my invention is to produce a device that can be applied to cribbing horses to prevent them from biting the crib.
The invention consists of two frames of horseshoe form arranged one within theother, the outer one being provided With pins or studs and the inner frame with openings through which said studs pass, the twoframes being held together at their upper ends by screws passing through slots in the outer frame, and the inner frame is kept in its normal position-that is, on a line with the points of the studs-by means of a spring, as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a front view of a device for preventing horses cribbing, embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on line a: at of Fig. 1.
A represents the outer and B the inner frame, which are both bent to a horseshoe form, so as to fit around the throat of the horse. The
. two frames are connected together by means of screws 0, that pass through slots D, formed in the sides of the outer frame.
In the center of the lower portion of the frame A is formed a hollow boss A, in which is secured a pin or stud E, around which is placed a small spiral spring F, the upper end of which bears against a collar B, formed on the inner frame B. To the frame A, on each side of the stud E, are also secured other studs E E. The inner frame is formed with slots b b, through which the studs pass, the ends of the studs being on a line with the inner side of the frame B when the latter is in its normal position, as shown.
To the upper part of the frame A on one Upon this strap I prefer to place a wide piece of leather I, that can be adjusted to any required position, so as to fit on the horses neck.
In applying the device to a cribbing horse, the inner frame B is placed next to his throat, the strap H passed over his neck and secured by means of the buckle G. Now when the horse is eating his food only the smooth surface of the frame B is in contact with his throat; but should he attempt to bite the crib he would arch his neck, and the muscles of the neck would be expanded, thus causing the inner frame B to be forced down and the points of the pins or studs E to come into contact with his throat, and the moment he feels them he will shift his head to its proper position.
It will be seen that with this apparatus a horse is prevented from cribbing and sucking wind, and he will swallow what corn he has taken into his mouth, thus forcing him to con sume his food, and thereby preventing waste.
What I claim as my invention is 1. A device for preventing horses cribbing, consisting of an outer frame having a hollow boss in the center of its lower portion, a pin or stud secured in the bottom of said hollow boss, and pins or studs on each side thereof, an inner frame having a collar in the center of its lower portion, through which the-stud in the hollow boss passes, and slots on each side of the collar, through. which the other studs on the outer frame pass, the two frames being held together by screws working in slots in the outer frame, the said frames being kept apart by a spiral spring, the lower end of which bears upon the bottom of the hollow boss in the outer frame and its upper end against the collar on the inner frame, substantially as set forth.
2. In a device for preventing horses cribbing, the combination, with an outer frame A, having a hollow boss A, a pin or spur E, secured in said boss, pins or spurs E on each side thereof, and slots D inthe sides of said In testimony whereoflhnve signed my name frame, of an inner frame B, having a collar to'thi's specification, in the presence of two 10 B and slots b, the screws G for connecting subscribingwitnesses, on this 15th day of J anthe two frames together, the spiral spring F, nary, A. D. 1891.
5 arranged in the hollow boss around the spur JOHN OHRISTESEN.
E, and means for securing the apparatus Witnesses: around the horses throat and neck, snbstan- CHAS. STEERE, daily as set forth. EDWIN PLANTA.
