- the special invention consists in the holders formed each of a single piece of suitable metal and with the sustaining portions of the holders twisted each half around,so as to bring one fiat side of the blank to the fastening-stud and the opposite fiat-side of the blank to the nose, whereby a portion of the sustaining part lies parallel in flat projection with the holder, and in such position the holder is adjustable on the nose by the spring of the twisted portion.
- the advantage is, one pattern of holders will fit many persons, when if the sustaining portion be not twisted many different patterns are required. Again, no rigid sustaining portion will permit a holder properly to fit any nose.
- a A represent the frames; B, the connect- ,upward in position to be secured to the stud C by the same screw which fastens the spring at one end.
- the holder is formed to stand parallel with the face of the glasses, and at Fig. II it is formed to have an incline to the faces of the glasses, and consequently it will fit the nose more at right angles to the line of the bridge.

EEEEEEEE ES N 0 4 6 4 4 5 6 P a t e n t e d D e 0 1 1 s 9 1 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ERNEST S. FOWLER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO A. B. FOWLER,
OF SAME PLACE.
EYEGLASSES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 464,456, dated December 1, 1891.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, ERNEST S. FOWLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Eyeglasses, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, illustrating the invention, in which- Figure I is an enlarged frontelevation of eyeglasses in which is embodied my invention; Fig. II, an elevation of one of the holders, having a forward incline from the glasses, removed from the frame; Fig. III, an elevation of one holder formed to stand parallel with the face of the glasses; Fig. IV, a plan of the blank from which a holder is formed.
This invention relates to an improvement for holding the eyeglasses properly to the nose of a person, and the special invention consists in the holders formed each of a single piece of suitable metal and with the sustaining portions of the holders twisted each half around,so as to bring one fiat side of the blank to the fastening-stud and the opposite fiat-side of the blank to the nose, whereby a portion of the sustaining part lies parallel in flat projection with the holder, and in such position the holder is adjustable on the nose by the spring of the twisted portion. The advantage is, one pattern of holders will fit many persons, when if the sustaining portion be not twisted many different patterns are required. Again, no rigid sustaining portion will permit a holder properly to fit any nose.
Application filed March 21, I891. Serial No. 385,887. (No model.)
A A represent the frames; B, the connect- ,upward in position to be secured to the stud C by the same screw which fastens the spring at one end. At Fig. III the holder is formed to stand parallel with the face of the glasses, and at Fig. II it is formed to have an incline to the faces of the glasses, and consequently it will fit the nose more at right angles to the line of the bridge. By means of holes in the holders D suitable cushions can be secured thereto.
I claim as new and desire patented- An improvement in eyeglasses, consisting of a holder for each bow in the form of reverse counter parts, each holder and retaining portion formed of a single T-plate, as shown, and the central bar of said plate bent upward on a curve by a twist in the bar to bring the retaining portion to the fastening-stud and the flatside of retaining portion toward the edge of the .holder, as specified, to form a spring adjustment.
ERNEST s. FOWLER.
