UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE.
JEREMIAH H. KIMBRO AND JOHN A.-KIMBRO, OF GEORGETOIVN, TEXAS.
ANDIRON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 464,437, dated December 1, 1891. Application filed May 1, 1891. Serial No. 391,246- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, JEREMIAH H. KIMBRO and JOHN A. KIMBRO, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Georgetown, in the county of IVilliamson and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Andirons, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
Our invention relates to certain improvements in andirons, having for its object to accommodate the fuel or sticks of wood as to length and to provide for burningeither wood 1 or coal fuel; and to these ends our invention consists of the novel combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter described and illustrated, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of our andiron as adapted for burning wood fuel. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing it with a grate attachment adapted for burning coal fuel. Fig. 4 is a detached view of the grate attachment. Fig. 5 is a modification of the grate. Fig. 6 is a rear view of our invention as embodied in Fig. 1; and Fig. 7 is a plan view showing the application of the modified form of grate of Fig. 5 to the parts, as disclosed in Fig. 2.
In carrying out our invention we employ a frame or arch A, suitably constructed to enable its lower ends to serve as feet, and B B represent right-angled supports or rests, upon which are placed the sticks of Wood for fuel. These supports or rests have upwardly-extending arms 13', provided with loops a, adapted to engage the cross-bar of the frame or arch A and to permit the movement of the supports or rests B nearer together or farther apart, according to the length of the sticks of wood to be placed upon said supports or rests.
C is an inverted-T bar or guard, also mov. able on and adapted to be removed from the cross-bar of the arch or frame A, the upper end of the vertical arm of said bar having a hook I), engaging said cross-bar of the arch or frame, said guard serving to prevent the falling of the fuel or wood out through "the arch upon the floor.
D is a grate attachment comprising a series of curved grate-bars c c, the back or inner ends of which are pivotally supported and held, spaced apart, upon a rod 0', adapt-.
provision thus being made for burning coal fuel when desired.
In Fig. 5 is shown a modified form of grate attachment, the grate-bars being fixed at their ends to longitudinal bars 6 c, the forward one 6 having hooked ends e to laterally engage the vertical arms of the supports or knees B upon their outsides, while the back end bar (2 is notched or form-ed with shoulders, as at a to adapt it to engage with the said supports or knees at or near their back ends upon the inside, and thus effect the interlocking of the grate attachment and and- H'On.
Having thus fully described our invention, 'we claim l. The andiron having the frame or arch and supports or rests connected to said arch or frame, in combination with the inverted- T-shaped bar having its vertical or stem portion adapted to engage the cross-bar of said arch or frame, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the frame or arch, the rests or supports having their upper ends provided with means for their connection to the crossbar of said frame or arch, the inverted-T bar having its stem portion adapted to engage or hook upon said cross-bar of the arch or frame, and its horizontal portion provided with notches, and the grate comprising the series of bars provided with shoulders adapted to engage said notches and supported upon a-rod adapted to engage and be supported in apertures in said supports or rests, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof We affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
JEREMIAH H. KIMBRO. JOHN A. KIMBRO. IVitnesses;
D. M. LITTLE, COOPER SANsoM.
