TATES FFICEQ CORN-HARVESTER.
SPEGIFIATION' forming part of Le'oters Patent N0. 468,975, clated November 24,1891. Application fi18(l December 291890. Serial N0. 376,101. (N0 model.)
T0 aZZ w7wm z't may concern:
Be it known that I, .TUDSON DAVID V AN EUREN, a, citizen 0f the United States, residing at Sioux City, in the eounty of VVoodbury and State 01: Iowa, have invented cerain new and useful Improvements in Oorn-Husking Machines, of which the followi'ng is a specification, reference being had t0 the accompanying drawings, forming part and pa1cel thereof.
The principal object 1 have in view is to provide a compact and effective machine that may be mude to traverse the fields of corn, pluck the ears from the sialks, anti then husk and cleliver the same into a receptacle dravvn alongsicle of 01 attaehed thereto; 01 tl1e machine may be usecl zus a stationary corn-h usket, if desired.
Referring t0 the drawings, wherein similar letters designate like parts in all the views, Figure 1 represents a plzm view of my new corn-husking maehine. parts of the machine broken away, detaehed, ancl enlarged. Fig. 5 is a, longitudinal secoional view through the trough at the rear end 0f the machine.
'lhose skilled in the art tq which this invention appertains will comprehend the essential featnres anti mode 0f operation of my invention f101n a careful scrutiny and cousidemtion of 1;he dmwings, in which The letter A designates the main fmme.
B is the driving-shaft, provicled Wih suitable supporting-bearings fixed in said main frzmie and carrying 13119 traction-wheel V adjaeent t0 the drivers seat d", Wl1ile the opposite sicle 0f said main frame A is supported by the Wheel W in the usual manner.
Suitably situated between the main wheel "W a-nd oppositely-placecl supporting-wheel V are tl1e slightly rearwarclly-converging rollers E, EL11(1 ad j acent 130 the rearwarcl end and running at a 1ight angle to said rearwardlyconverging longitudinal rollers E ar'e the transverse rollers F. 'lhe rollers E are provided with suitable end bemings fixed tothe supporting transverse ti1nbers of the fran1e A and l1ave spiral grooves 1unning outwarclly ancl rearward from encl t0 end thereof, and the forward conical ends 0f said rollers E are provided With spirally-situaed spikes 01' teeth n, corresp onding with the spirals of the rollers.
Figs. 2, 3, and 4 showv Situated adjacent 130 and im mediateiy above the forward end of the husking-rollers E a1e tl1e corn-gahering gears 01 reels G, whicl1, as shown in ehe drziwings, intermesh slightly, so that the motion of one will be transmitted t0 the other, thereby obviating he necessity 0f providing supplemental mechanisms f01 operating the left-hand reel, ancl suitablyabove the rearward endsof said husking-rollers is the fixed guard and guide H, provided With Ehe recurved outwardly-sprea cling wings h, suitably held in place by 1neans 0f securingpins h 01 in any suitable manner.
The transverse rollers F have their fixed supporting-bearings in-the elevator-trough K and are inclosed therein A traveling belt 01 apron L, situated above the rollers F, serves f0r elevating sind delivering the husked corn into a convenienl: truck 01 receptacle at the delivery side of ehe machine, as indicated in Fig. l. This belt is sl1own in said figure broken away t0 disclose saicl rollers, and the corn is preferably fed onto its upper side neai irs rear end through the fixed qmm-d and guide I-I, and by said belt is carried t0 the bo'utom 0f the trough and through said trough 130 the receptacle provided f01 the husked 001n. It is obvious, however, that if deemed desirable the rear end 0f 'the fixed gnard and guide may be placed in such relation ro the trough as to itself direct the corn into the Same a1; a point adj-acent t0 the 1 9m end of the elevating-rollers, in whi eh case tl1e belt will merely assist the rollers in elevating the corn from the trough into the receptaele.
The running height 0f the gathering-gears is adj ustably regulated by means 0f the handlever M and quadrant Q,said lever beingeonnected witl1 the tongue T, whieh is pivoted to the forward end of the frame by a xod 0", the forward end of whicl1 is secured to a plate t, attached t0 tlie upper surfzwe 0f said tongue anal projecting upward therefrom.
The 1node of operation is as follows: M0- tion is imparted to Ehe husking machinery through tl1e driving 01 traction Wheel W, power-shaft B, gear-wheel a, and engaging pinion a -to the trnsverse shaft O, eoacting with other suitable bevelgears, shafts, and pinions as follows: The shaft O has a siight sliding movement in its bearingsin the frame A, whereby the husking machinery may be thrown out of 01 into ge2u, as seen. One means fo1 accomplishing the, throwing int0 and 0ut 0f gea1 of the husking machinery is shown in the drawings; but I (10 not wish 130 be understood as limiting myself L0 this particul2u means; as any suitable means f01 this purpose may De adopted without departing from the spirib 0f my invention. Said means consists of a lever f, secured at one end to one end of a shaft f", the opposite end 0f which shaft is connected With a lateh f by means 0f a 10d f, said 1atch hzwing, as shown, a projection f which engages the side 0I:' the bevel gear-wheel b, whieh is on the shaft C. The shaft O 1's encircled by a coil-spring X, which tends to keep the said bevel-gear 0ut of engagement withthe other. Frorn the abowa it Will be readily seen that if thehnsking maehinery is in gear anr1 it is desired t0 throw it 0111 of gear all that is necessary is to move the 1ever f in a certain direetion t0 cause the latch f 110 be diseng-aged from the bevel-gear b, when the spring X Will drzuv said shaft toward it snfliciently t0 disengage said bevel-gear from the oher bewl-gear b, and when it is desired to throw the husking machinery into gear it is 0111y necessary t0 mo've saidlever in the opposite direction, when the latch will be caused to engage said bevel-gear 011 the shaft O, overcome the tension of the spring 0n said shaft, an l move said bevel-gear into engagement With the other. Bevel-gears b communicate motion to the rearwmdly-runnin;r shaft D und to the eorn stripping and husking 1011e15 E byn1eans 0f uhe gear-wheel c and pinions d d, fixed on Lhe rear ends of said shaft and rollers, respectively, while a, pinion e, fixed 011 the forward end of the lower shaft D of the elevator, meshes with the adjacent pinion d and gives proper motion to the twin elevator rollers F am]. elevator apron L through the engaging gears e, a e and e* and sprockec-wheels and chain g g, respeetively. A longitudinally-reaehing shaft D runs forwardly direetly above 2u'1d in a 1ight line With the shaft D, and is provided With a pinion b 011 its 1ear end, conesponding with an equal engagingpinion of uhe said shaft D, (see Fi n 3,) whereby motion is given to the gathering-wheels 01 intermshing right and. left ree1s G of tho upright shafts G through the wenn s, fixed to the forward end of sa'1d shaf'u D and worm-engaging whee1 s of said upright shaft. The gathering-wheels, the huskingrollers, the elevator-rolls, apron, am]. other moving mechanisms a1e given 1notion by means 0f the main whee1 and traveling parts, as shown; buu the machine may remain stationary zmd ehe operative parts propelled by means of abe1t 01' shaft deriving its power fron1 any forma 01 kind 0f motive power at band, as 1's evident.
Othe1 variations 01 modifieations of my invention n1ay be applied by those skilled in the art, and hence I (10 noo design to confine myself to the precise construetion shown; but
'What I d0 elaim, and desire t0 secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. In a corn-husking machine, the internmshing gathering-reels G G, mounted upon verticalshafts,andrearwardly-convergingspirally-grooved husking and stripping rolls E, extending longitudinally 0f the machine and. provided at their forward ends with spirallyarranged teeth, in combinat-ion with atrough Lt the rem end of 1;he machine, elevating and delivering; rolls in said trough, an elevatingbe1t above said 1011S, and means for operating said p2uts.
9. In a corn-husking maehine, the intermeshing gathering-reels G G, mounted upon vertica1 shafts, spirally-grooved husking and stripping rollers E, and a fixed guard and guide seeured to the 1e2u end 0f the machine and having forwm-dly-projecting wings 10- cated 011 opposite sides 015 the opening between said rollers, in eombination With a trough m the rein end of Lhe machine, e1e' vating and delivering rolls in s-aid trongh, an elevating-belt above said rolls, and means for operating said parts.
In test'nnony whereof I hereunto affix my hand and signature, in the presence of two witnesses this 27th day oft October, A. D. 1890.
J. DAVID VAN BUREN.
