No. 463,921. l 'PatentedNOvyZ 1891..
lll'I llllllhllll WIZJVESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL RUFER, OF NEW PHILADELPHIA, OHIO.
PLIERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 463,921, dated November 24, 1891.
Application filed September 1l, 1891. Serial No. 405,406. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL RUEEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Philadelphia, in the county of Tuscarawas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pliers; and I do hereby declare the following lto be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to tools or devices for mutilating the threads upon the extended portions of bolts after the locking-nut has been turned home to secure the bolt in position; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a tool embodying the improvements of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail perspective view showing that portion of the device used in mutilating the threads.
Referring by reference-numerals to the accompanying drawings, l designates a lever having a transverse aperture near its upper end to receive a pivot-bolt, and having also a laterally-curved jaw 3, which jaw is grooved longitudinally throughout its inner curved surface from its pivotal point outward.
4. indicates a shoulder on the inner face of this lever, which shoulder is diagonally disposed with respect to the lever near its upper end.
5 is a second lever which is fulcrnmed to the lever l by a pivot-bolt 6, secured in place by a nut 7, or in lieu of said nut the end of the boltmay be upset. The lever 5 is provided above its pivotal point with a knifeedge 8, which is designed to mutilate the threads of the bolt after the nut has been turned to place, and to thereby prevent the accidental removal of the nut from the bolt. rlhe extreme outer end of the cutting-blade S terminates in a V-shaped point 8, adapted to cut into the extended end of the bolt and raise thereon small ribs or elevations adapted to effectively check the accidental reverse movement of the nut. It will therefore be seen that my improved tool not only mutilates the threads upon the bolt, but also elevates the surface of said bolts into a series of ribs or points, thus producing an effective lock for the nut.
The device is exceedingly simple in construction, while at the same time it is equally useful, as it can bequickly applied and is an absolute preventive of the accidental removal of the nut from the bolt.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with a lever having a transverse aperture near its upper end and a jaw grooved longitudinally on its inner face, of a lever fulcrumed thereto and provided at its upper end with a knife-edge for mutilating thethreads of the bolt with which it is brought int-o engagement, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL RUFER. lVitnesses:
JOHN W. KINsEY, OLIVER H. HOOVER.
