JAR COVER AND CLAMP.

FRANK H. PALMER, OF BROOKLYN, NElV YORK.
JAR COVER AND CLAMP.
QPECIIF GATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 462,154, dated October 27, 1891.
Application .filed Mare}: 14, 1891. Serial No. 385,000. (No model.)
Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State 7 'y of Fig. 1.
of New York, have invented a new and Improved Fastener', of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to fasteners for holding covers of jars, cans, &c., in place.
The object of the invent-ion is to provide a new and improved fastener which is simple and durable in construction, securely holds the cover in place on the mouth of the jar or can, prevents displacement of the packing,
and can be readily opened when desired with out spoiling; the fastener, thus permitting of reusing the device.
The invention consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be hereinafter fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,-
in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan View of the improvement. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan View of the cover with -the packing in place and part in section. Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation of the improvement on the line 00 a: of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a transverse section of the same on the line Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional side elevation of part of the improvement, and Fig. 6 is a like view of a modified form of the same.
The jar or can A is provided with the neck or month B, adapted to be closed by a cover O, provided in its center with a raised portion D, formed with diametrically-extending grooves D and D pressed into the said raised portion and having their bottoms inclined downwardly and outwardly, as is plainly illustrated in Figs. 3 and t. At the junction of the grooves D and D is formed in the groove D a straight part D the lower or outer ends of the said grooves terminating at a downwardly-extending annular flange D passing loosely around the outer sides of the neck or mouth B, as is plainly illustrated in Figs. 3, 4, 5, and 6. From this vertical flange D extends outward a horizontal and ann ular flange D, on the under side of which is held the packing-ring E, made 01": paper or other suitable material and resting with its under side on an annular projection B, formed on the outside of the neck or mouth B.
The packing-ring E is secured to the cover O by bending the outer part of the horizontal flange D downward and inward under the under side of the packing-ring E, nearits outer edge, as is plainly shown in Figs. l and 6. This doubled-up part D of the flange D is outside of the annular projection B, so as not to touch the latter. If desired, the inner edge of the packing-ring E may be fastened onto the cover by doubling up the lower part of the vertical flange D asis plainly shown in Fig.6. This doubled-up part D engages the under side of the ring E near its inner edge, and passes into a recess formed in the annular projection B, so that only the middle part of the packing-ring E is in contact with the raised portion of the annular flange B, as is plainly illustrated in the said Fig. 6. Through the diametrical groove D passes a bail F, which rests with its middle part on the straight part D of the cover D, as is plainly shown in the drawings.
The outer ends of the bail F downward to form the parts F, which extend through notches D formed in the annular horizontal flange D of the cover D. The lower ends of the parts F are bent outward, as at F and extend into vertical slots B formed diametrically opposite each other in a second annular projection B formed on the outside of the mouth or neck B directly bebelow the annular projection B. The bent parts F of the bail F are bent downward, to form a straight part IF, the inner sides of which extend beyond the outer surface of the annular projection B so as to permit of inserting a knife or other instrument between the said part F and the outer surface .of the projection B to unfasten the cover,
as hereinafter more fully described.
From the lower ends of the parts F extend inwardly the lugs F adapted to engage the under side of the annular projection B so as to lock the cover C onto the neck or mouth B of the can or jar A. The upper part of each vertical slot B is somewhat deeper than the lower part to conform to the bend F and prevent the downwardly-extending parts F, F and F from coming in contact are bent ICO with the inner walls of the said vertical slots or grooves.
When thecover C is disengaged from the jar A the packing-ringE is held firmly in place on the inside of the said cover, so that when the latter is placed over the mouth or neck of the jar or can A the said packing-ring readily seats itself on the top ofthe annular projection B. The bail F in its normal position extends about horizontally, so that the lugs F rest in the slots B and when the operator now desires to fasten the cover to the mouth or neck of the jar B he presses onto the outer ends-of the said bail, so that the lug F moves downward in the slots B to finally snap under the bottom of the annular projection B thus securely locking the cover 0 onto the mouth or neck of the jar or can A. In placing the cover 0 onto the neck of the jar it is necessary that the diainetrical groove D, containing the bail F, as well as the notches D are in line or register with the vertical rooves E of the annular projection B so that the downwardly-ex tending parts of the bail with the lug F en-- I :-through said groove and having depending gage the said grooves or slots B When the cover@ is locked onto the jar, as j is described above, then a displacement or turning of the cover on the neck of the jarv is impossible, as the downwardly-extending parts F engage the notches D of the cover 0, and the bent parts F engage the sidewalls of the grooves or slots B of the annular pro- 5 By the pressure on the ends of;
jection E the bail F a pressure is exerted onto the cover (1, so that the annular flange D of the I said cover firmly presses onto the packingring E, so thatthe latter is well seated von the 1 top of the annular projection B, thereby preventing any leakage or spilling of the contents of the jar. lhe jar is thus rendered perfectly air-tight.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A jar-cover having an annular dependto form a packing-groove, substantially as set forth.
2. A jar-cover having an annular depending flange D an annular horizontal flange D projecting outward from the flange D and bent downward and 'inward'at its periphery to form a groove to support a packingring near its outer edge, and the doubled-up portion D at the juncture of the two said flanges D D, to support the packing near its inner edge, substantially as set forth.
3. A jar-cover grooved transversely across its top and formed wit-h the vertical andhorizontal flanges D D the periphery of the flange D being bent downward and inward to form a groove to receive the outer edge of a packingring, and notches D in the outer edge of flange D substantially asset forth.
4. A jar-cover grooved transversely across its top and formed with the vertical and horizontal flanges D D the latter being turned under at its periphery to form a groove a flat packing-ring under the flange D and supported at its outer edge in said groove, the notches D and the fastening F, extending ends extending through said notches and turned inward, as at F at their lower ends, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination, with a jar or can provided with two external annular projections located one above the other, of a cover adapted to close the mouth of the jar and formed with an annular flange, a packing-ring held on the under side of the cover-flange by a doubled-up edge of the latter, the saidring being arranged to seat itself on the uppermost of said projectionsof the jar or can,.and a bail held on the said cover and formed with downward parts or arms and lugs, thesaid parts extending through grooves in the lowermost projection of the jar or can, and the said lugs being adapted to engage the bottom of the said lowermost projection, substantially as shown and described.
