TROLLEY-WIRE SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 461,785, dated October 20, 1891.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEROY S. PFOUTS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trolley- Vire Supports and Guards; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the an- IO nexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, in which Figure 1 shows a portion of the trolleywire properly located above the track, also I5 showing guard-wire. Fig. 2 is a view of a portion of one of the guard-wires, showing the v guard-wire and trolley-wire insulators. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing an end View of the guard-wire insulator and a side view of the trolley-wire supporting bracket or clamp. Fig. 4 is a detached view of one section of the insulators designed and calculated to insulate the trolley-wire from its supporting or cross wires. Fig. 5 is a transverse section of the trolley-wire and guard-wires, showing the trolley-supporting bracket properly located and attached to one of the main cross-wires. Fig. 6 is a detached view of one of the trolleywire binding-sheets, Fig. 7 is a detached view of one of the main cross-wire brackets. Fig. 8 is a side view of the trolley bracket or clamp, showing the trolley-wire properly attached thereto and the cross-wire brackets properly connected to the trolley-Wire bracket or clamp. Fig. 9 is a detached view of one of the trolley-wire brackets or clamps. Fig. 10 is a transverse section of the trolley-wire, showing a portion of the main cross-wire and its bracket or clamp properly located thereon.
The present invention has relation to trolley-wire supports and guards; and it consists in the different parts and combination of, parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the trolley-wire, which is supported directly above the railway-track, and is held at the required height by means of the main cross-wires a, which cross-wires are attached in the ordinary manner to the posts or standards B. The trolley-wire brackets are each made in two pieces or sections 0, and are securely clamped together by means of the bolts 1) or their equivalents. Each section of the trolley-wire or clamp or bracket O is provided with the recess a, and when the brackets O are placed together or mated the recesses 0 will be opposite to each other, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 10, said recesses being for the purpose of receiving the leaves or tangs of the trolley-wire binding-sheet, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 10.
To the top or upper portions of the trolleywire brackets O are pivotally attached the main cross-wire brackets D, which brackets are made in sections or pairs and are securely bound together at their top or upper ends by means of the clamping-bolts d or their equivalents. The main cross-wire brackets D are each provided with the cross-arm d, which cross-arm is provided with the groove 6, which groove is for the purpose of receiving and holding the insulation E and the main crosswire a.
The insulation E may be substantially of the form shown in Fig. 4, and is made of hard rubber or like material, it'being immaterial the kind of material used, except to properly insulate the main cross-wire a.
The binding-sheet F is bent or formed as illustrated in Fig. 6, and is preferably formed thin, so as not to-interfere with the movements of the trolley-wheel H, and at the same time keep the trolley-wheel in perfect contact.
The inner edges of the trolley-wire clamp or brackets O are beveled so as to conform to the form of the trolley-Wire, and for the purpose of causing the binding-sheet F to hug the trolley-wire A when the brackets C are clamped or bound together. The bindingsheets F are provided with the apertures f, 5 which are for the purpose of receiving the binding-bolts b, and thereby securely hold and attach the binding-sheets F to the trolleywire brackets C.
The guard-wires g are located a short dis- IOO tance above the trolley-wire A, as illustrated in Fig. 1, and are preferably adjusted about two feet apart, and are supported at the re quired height by means of the cross-wires a, which cross-wires are attached to the posts B substantially as illustrated in Fig. 1. The guard-wires g are prevented from spreading by means of the short cross-wires a which cross-wires-are preferably located about ten feet apart; but it will be understood that they may be located any desired distance apart without departing from the nature of my invention. To the short cross-wires a are attached the insulating-blocks I, which are provided with the pendent arms h, which are for the purpose of assisting in holding and keep ing the supporting-wires h out of contact with the short cross-wires a To the insulating-blocks I are attached the suspendingwires h, which wires are bedded in the grooves W. The bottom or lower ends of the supporting-wires h are fixed to the insulating spool or block J, which spool or block .I is attached to the top or upper part of the trolley-wire brackets O. The trolley wire brackets O, which are supported by the short cross-wires a", are slightly modified, which modification consists in providing the curved arms 70, to which the spool or block J is attached by means of the bolt k, passing through aperturesin said arms and spool. It will be understood that by providing the insulating-blocks I and the insulating spools or blocks J each end of the supporting-wire 7L will be insulated from the trolley-wire A, thereby providing a double insulation from the guard-wires g. The guard-wires g may be formed of common wire, as their only objects and purposes are to guard the trolley-wire A and at the same time provide a means for supporting the trolley-wire at points bet-ween the posts or stand ards B. It will be seen that by this arrangement little expense will be added in the construction of electric railways, and at the same time telegraph, telephone, and electric-light wires will be prevented from coming in contact with the live trolley-wire. It will also be seen that I am enabled to support the trolleywire at intervals, and thereby prevent the trolley-wire from reaching any danger-point. For the purpose of preventing the insulatingblocks I from slipping back and forth on the short cross-wires a the binding-wires a are provided, which are twisted to the short crosswires a For the purpose of feedin the trolley-wire A the insulating material E is removed and the brackets D attached direct to the main cross-wire a. If desired, the insulating material may be placed in contact with the trolley-wire A and a separate feed-wire attached to the bracket D or its equivalent; but I prefer to remove the insulating material and use the main cross-wire a as a feedwire.
Having f nlly described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the trolley-wire A, the brackets (J, formed in pairs or sections and provided with the recesses c, the crosswire brackets D, formed in pairs or sections and pivotally connected to the brackets O, and the binding-sheet F,substantially asand for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the trolley-wire brackets O, the cross-wire bracket D, provided with the grooved arms (1, the insulating material E, located in the grooved arms cl, and the binding slieet F, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination of the trolley-wire A, the guard-wires g, the cross-wires aand a, the short cross-wires a the insulators I, fixed to the cross-wires a the suspendingwvires h, the insulating spools or blocks J, and the brackets O and D, substantially as and for the pur-' pose specified.

The combination of the trolley-wire A, the guard-wires g, located above the trolleywire A, the short cross-wires a located between the main cross-wires a, the suspendingwires h, and the brackets D, having attached thereto the insulating spools or blocks J, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
5. The combination of the bracket D, provided with the grooved cross-arm d' and pivotally connected to the trolley-wire bracket 0, the bracket 0, and means for clamping the bracket D to the cross-wire, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
6. The combination of the trolley-wire A, the brackets 0, formed in sections or pairs, and the binding-sheets F, located around the trolley-wire, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
