ALVIN VON AUW, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TOLIEBENROTH, VON AUW du OO., OF SAME PLACE.
METHOD OF MAKING SPRING-BACKS FOR BOOKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 461,653, dated October 20, 1891.
Application filed May 16, 1891. Serial No. 392,954. (No model.)
To all whom. t may concern:
Be it known that I, ALWI'N VON AUW, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Manufacture of Spring-Backs for Blank-Books, of which the following is a specification.
. This invention has reference to an improved 1o method of making spring-backs for blank and other books, by which the same can be manu factured in a quicker and cheaper manner and without requiring skilledhands; and the invention consists of a method of making I5 spring-backs for blank and other books by the following steps: first, ceinenting to a piece of binders board raised parallel strips of the thickness of the hubs to be produced on the back; secondly, cutting from said board pieces 2o corresponding to the width of the spring-backs to be produced; thirdly, beveling the edges of the hubs; fourthly, cementing the covering of the back to the same; and, lastly, shaping the spring-back and its hubs in suitable dies.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure I represents a top View of a piece of binders board with the parallel strips of the thickness of the hubs cemented to the same, said figure representing the first stage of my improved 3o method of making spring-backs foi-blank and other books. Figs. Il, III, and IV illustrate the successive steps of my method, showing respectively the pieces cut off from the binders board, the beveled hubs on the same, and
3 5 the covered and shaped spring-back; and Figs. H2111, and IV are horizontal sections, respectively, of the FigsII, III, and IV.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
4c Referring to the drawings, a represents a piece of binders board of suitable thickness and size, to which are cemented raised parallel strips b b, that are made of the thickness of the hubs to be produced on the backs.
The piece of binders board ais then cut into strips d of the required size transversely to the lines of the strips b b, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. I, Il, and Il, each strip corresponding in width to the size of the spring-back to be produced. The hubs b on 5o the strips thus obtained are then beveled olf at the ends, as shown in Figs. III and IIIf, the entire strip with its hubs being then covered by the coveringe, which is cemented over the same by means of glue or other material and placed with the strip` d into hot dies, by which the convex shape is imparted to the spring-back, the heat ot' the dies softening the glue and producing the intimate' adhesion of the covering material to the sur- 6o face of the spring-back and its hubs, so that the cover for the blank-book can be finished by attaching the boards forming the sides, which is accomplished in the usual manner.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The method herein described of making spring-backs for blank-books, which consists of the following successive steps: first, ce- 7o menting parallel strips of the thickness of the hubs to be produced transversely on a piece of binders board of the required size; secondly, cutting strips of a width corresponding to the spring-backs to be produced from said binders board transversely to the hubforniing strips; thirdly, beveling the ends of said hubs; fourthly, cementing the covering to said strips and shaping the latter in heated dies, so as to produce a spring-back of the re` 8o quired shape, and the intimate adhesion of the covering material with the same, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I 'have signed my name in pres- 8 5 ence of two subscribing witnesses.
