AUTOMATIC HYDROCARBON-INJECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters :Patent No. 461,500, dated Octobel` 20, 1891.
Application filed March l1, 1891. Serial No. `384,596. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, CHARLES D. JUVINALL, acitizen of the United States, residing at Upper Sandusky, in the county of Wyandot and 5 State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic-Hydrocarbon-Injectors; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains tomake and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in automatic hydrocarbon liquid-fuel burners or injectors, and the novelty will be fully understood from the following'V description and claims, when taken in connection withthe accompanying drawings, in which the figure is alongitudinal diametrical sectional view of my improved burner or injector.
Referring by letter to the said drawing, A
vindicates the main body or cylindrical casing of my improved device, which is preferably of the proportional size illustrated.
Situated at about the point illustrated in the cylinder-body A is a partition-wall B, which is provided with a central screw-threaded aperture and an integral laterally-extending socket C, which is internally threaded for a portion of its length and is provided at its end with an inwardly-directed slightly-curved liange c, through which takes the oil -tube presently to be described.
D indicates a packing-nut, which is externally threaded to engage the threads of the socket branch C, and is provided with a bore, as shown, sufficiently large to aord a passage for the oil-tube which takes therethrough, together with'a suitable packing.
The rear end of the main body-section A is externallythreaded, as illustrated, for the attachment of a cap-section E, which is provided with a hexagonal shoulder e, whereby it may be readily turned off of the cylinder when desired. This cap-section E is also provided with a central screw-threaded bore to receive the rear portion of the oil-tube, and its neck portion is externally threaded at its end to receive an internally-threaded packing-cap F, which is provided with a central ap rture for the passage of the before-mentioned-oil-tube, one end of which extends outside the injector.
The forward end of the main body-section A is contracted and is internally threaded, as shown, for the attachment of a tubular section G, which may be of any preferable length, and is externally threaded at its lower end to receive an internallythreaded cap-nut H, which is provided with a central aperture 7L, for a purpose presently described.
From the construction described it will be understood that the cylinder A is divided into two compartments, and leading from the rear compartment l is a pipe J, which leads to an oil-tanker other source of supply, and is provided at a suitable point in its length with a valve or cock, whereby the flow of oil may be governed.
Leading from the forward chamber K of the body-cylinder, and preferably at a point diametrically opposite to the pipe J, isa pipe L, which leads to a steam-generator and is also provided with a regulating-cock for obvious purposes.
The oil tube or pipe M, which takes longitudinally through the injector, is composed of two sections m and m,tl1e rear section of which is preferably of a greater diameter than t-he forward section and extends from the steamchamber K beyond the rear end of the inj ector, where it is provided with a fixed handwheel N,.whereby it is adjusted, as will be presently disclosed. The large section m of the oil-pipe is threaded for a portion of its length adjacent to its inner end to'engage the internal threads of the cap-section E, with respect to which it is adjusted, and 4at a pointof its length within the oil-chamber I the said pipe is provided with ports p for the induction of the oil. The forward sectionm of the oil-pipe, which is connected to the rear section in the manner shown, has its forward end contracted, whereby a small dischargeopening for the oil is afforded.
Taking diametrically through the tubular section G of theinjector adjacent to the lower end thereof are screws P, which bind upon the oil-pipe section m and are designed to hold said pipe in the longitudinal center of the tubular section G and in alignment with the discharge-aperture in the cap Il.
By the construction described it will be seen 'that the oil-pipe maybe readily adj usted with respect to the forward or discharge end IOO of the injector, which is a great advantage, as will presently appear.
The operation of our improved injector is as follows: rlhe valve in the oil-feed pipe being open, the oil fiows into the oil-chamber and through the port or ports pinto the pipe M. Steam is then introduced into the steamchamber through the pipe L and is mingled with the oil at the discharge end of the oilpipe. In starting the injector the valves in the oil and steam pipes are both opened, and should the pressure of steam shut off the discharge of oilthe oil-pipe is adjusted by means of the devices described so as to bring the discharge end thereof nearer the discharge aperture in the-cap II, which, when the proper point is reached, will keep the steam at the desired pressure without further manipulation.
\Vhen it becomes necessary to cleanse the oil-pipe M and theY oil-feed pipeJ, itis simply necessary to turn the hand-wheel N, whichis fixed on the end of the pipe M, so as to draw the discharge end of the said pipe as far away from the burner-aperture h as possible, when steam being admitted through the pipe L will take through the pipe M and the feed-pipe J with suiticient force and heat to thoroughly drive all the sediment and oil in the two pipes back into the reservoir or tank.
Although I have specifically described the form and construction, together with the arrangement of the several elements of my improved injector, yet it is obvious that such modifications may be made in practice as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In an automatic hyd rocarbon-inj ector, the combination, with a cylindrical body-scction comprising oil and steam chambers and oil and steam pipes discharging into the rcspective chambers, of the cap-section mounted on one end of the body, the tubular section leading from the opposite end of the body, the cap-nut mounted on the end of said tubular section and provided with a discharge-aperture, and the oil-pipe extendig longitudinally through the injector and adapted to be longitudinally adjusted with respect thereto, said pipe being provided within the oil-chamber with induction-ports, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In an automatic hydrocarbon or liquidfuel burner, the combination, with a cylindrical body-section comprising oil and steam chambers having induction-ports to receive oil and steam pipes, the cap-section mounted on one end` of the body and having a screwthreaded bore, the tubular section leading from the opposite end of said body-section, and a cap-nut mounted on the end of said tubular section and having a central disf charge-aperture, of an oil-pipe extending lon gtudinally through the injector and provided with screw-threads to engage the threads of the cap-section and having its discharge end contracted,` the diametrical screws taking through the tubular section and binding upon the oil-pipe, and a suitable means for adjusting the oil-pipe, substantially as described.
