UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALEXANDER D. CREE, OF \VAYNESBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
BARBERS CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 461,494, dated October 20, 1891.
Application filed February 24, 1891 Serial No. 382,662- (No model.) I
This invention has relation to barber's chairs; and its object is to increase the efficiency and simplify the construction of the means for tilting the back thereof. This object is accomplished by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which.
Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of my improved chair; Fig. 2, a front elevation of the toothed rack; and Fig. 8 is a side view of the operating mechanism detached.
In the drawings, 1 represents the frame, mounted on legs, for supporting the seat 1*, which frame and seat are rigid, and 2 the back of the chair, which is pivoted at its lower end to said frame 1 at the rear of said seat 1*. Securely attached to said back 2, above the pivoted end thereof, is a downwardly-extending bar 3, the lower end of which is pivoted to the upper end of a connecting-bar 4, which itself is pivoted at its lower end to a horizontal lever 5. 'lhislever 5 is pivoted at its forward extremity to the forward extremity of the chair and extends thence rearwardly to and beyond the rear side of said chair, where it is bent downward and outward to form a treadle 7.
Arranged in a vertical position between the two rear cross-braces of the chair is a rack 8,
which serves to hold the lever 5, and consequently the back, in any desired position.
In operation itis only necessary in order to tilt the back to disengage the lever from the rack and raise said lever until the back has been tilted to the desired angle and then en gage the lever with the rack, which will hold it and the back in their adjusted positions, it being of course understood that there is sufficient play of thelever 5 and bar 4 on their pivots to allow the slight movement of the former necessary to release it from the rack.
Having now described my invention, what I believe to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with a barbers chairhaving a rigid seat-supporting portion supported on legs, and a back pivoted to said seatsupporting portion,of the hereimdescribed means for adjusting the position of said back and holding it in its adjusted position, comprising a bar 3, attached to said pivoted back at its upper end, a connecting-rod 4, to which the lower extremity of said bar is pivoted, a lever 5, to which the lower end of said rod 4 is pivoted, said lever being pivoted at its forward end to the forward portion of the chair and extending thence horizontally rearward to the rear side of the chair and bent at its rear end downward and rearward to form a foottreadle, and a vertical rack located beneath the plane of the seat contiguous to said lever and adapted to be engaged thereby, all suhstantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I hereunto affix my signature this 9th day of January, A. D. 1891.
