Description

(No Model.)
T. O. DEXTER.
PAPER FOLDING MACHINE. v No. 461,422. Paented 0013.20, 1891.
I A, I i MM 7 v UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
TALBOT O. DEXTER, OF FULTON, NE\V YORK.
PAPER-FOLDING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 461,422, dated October 20, 1891.
Application filed March 21, 1891.
To all w/tom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, TALBOT-O. DEXTER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Fulton, Oswego county, State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Paper-Folding Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to facilitate the adjustment of sheet-carrying mechanism as required to connect. and disconnect a paper-folding machine with a printing-press. Heretofore rigid and jointed boards and frames have been used for the purpose and rollers and tapes connected therewith in such a manner that they could be jointly laid on top of the folding-machinewhen not in use.
My invention consists in the construction and combination of brackets with the frame of a folding-machine to support rollers and tapes and also to support the lower end of a skeleton'bridge that is adapted to be adj ustably and detachably suspended from the table of a printing-press, and also in the construction and combination of brackets adapted to be connected with the top portion of the bridge to support rollers and frames in such a manner that the brackets at the topof the bridge can be detached therefrom and the rollers and tapes on the brackets jointly handled and placed on the top of the folding-machine or on the floor without disconnecting them from the folding-machine and the bridge remain suspended from the press or detached and stored away Wherever desired when not in use.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view showing my completev invention connected with a folding-machine and the table of a printing-press as required for practical use. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional detail view th rough the line 00 x of Fig. 1, clearly showing the end of one of the bridge-boards resting in the supports provided therefor in the bracket fixed to the frame of the foldingmachine. Fig. 3 is a plan View showing the relative positions of the brackets fixed to the folding-machine and the brackets and rollers and tapes detachably connected with the top end portion of the movable bridge.
A represents the frame of a paper-folding machine, and B the table of a printing-press. A metal bracket 0, adapted to support the Serial No. 385,943. (No model.)
rollers Nos. 1, 2, 3, and 4, fixed to the top corners of the frame A to aid in operating endless tapes in a common way. The upper branches that extend rearward horizontally to support the roller No.2 and the bridge. These flanges are in right-angled position to each other, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and in connection with the flange d produce a recess or rest adapted to admit the lower ends of the side pieces of the bridge to support thebridge at various angles, as may be required in conmeeting the folder with different presses at different times or at variable distances from the same press.
11 represents a skeleton bridge composed of a series of straight plane boards is, that are rigidly connected by cleats m, fixed to their under sides. ropes fixed to the ends of the cleats are detachably and adjustably connected with the frame or table of a printing-press by means of buckles, snap-hooks, and screw-eyes, or in any suitable way, as required to thereby suspend the bridge and my complete sheet-carrying mechanism, as shown in Fig. 1.
C are metal brackets adapted to be detachably connected with the top portion of the bridge 11. Each has a bearing at its top end to support a roller No. 5 and a lateral branch at its lower end to support a roller No. 6 and a branch C adapting them to be rigidly connected with each other by means of a rod 0 fixed thereto by means of setscrews or in any suitable way. n are pulleybearers fixed to the rods C to support pulleys n and endless tapes or", that extend over the pulleys No. 1. of the brackets 0 allow them to be placed on studs 1', fixed to the edges of the side pieces k of the bridge H, and horizontal open slots at their top portions admit them to engage screw-threaded projections r at the upper portions of the same pieces in such manner that they can be clamped fast to the edge by means of thumb-nuts r on the ends of the pins to securely and detachably fasten the brackets to the bridge as required to operate Leather stra s m cords or Open slots in the lower end.
the tapes on the rollers for the purpose of carrying printed sheets from the deli very mechanism of a press to the folding mechanism of a folding-machine.
In applying my invention to a folding-machine and press I first suspend and adjust the bridge 11 from the press and then cut off the lower end of the bridge to make it the exact length required to engage the rests provided therefor on the brackets 0, fixed to the folder-frame and then attach the connected brackets C with the top of the bridge and place the tapes on the rollers in a common way.
It is obvious that my sheet-carrying device can be thus readily fitted and fixed in position as required for practical use, and also readily detached and separated and placed away when not in use in such a manner that the tapes will remain on the rollers and the separated parts in such position and condition that they can be speedily replaced and readjusted whenever desired.
I claim as my invention 1. A sheet-carryingdevice comprising metal brackets having branch roller-bearers and recesses for admitting and supporting the corners of a bridge composed of wooden boards, said brackets being fixed to the corners of a folding frame, a bridge composed of a series of parallel boards in the same plane and rigidly connected by cross-cleats and provided with bracket-fastenings at their upper end portions, and two metal brackets having branches and roller-bearers and adapted to be detachably connected with the bridge, and means for adjustably and detachably connecting the said bridge with a printing-press to operate in the manner set forth, for the purposes stated.
2. A sheet-carrying device com prising metal brackets having branch roller-bearers and remit and engage the studs in the bridge, and
means for adjustably and detachably conneetin g the said bridge with a printing-press to operate in the manner set forth, for the purposes stated.
