UNITED STATES V JOHN F. OBRIEN, OF BRISTOL, RHODE ISLAND.
BOOT-TREE REST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 461,269, dated October 13, 1891.
Application filed February 28, 1891. Serial No. 383,276. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. OBRIEN, a citizenwof the United States, and a resident of Bristol, in the county of Bristol and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boot-Tree Rests, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in boot-tree rest-s to be used in the manufacture of rubber boots of differentsizes; and it consistsin the improved construction of the same, whereby the desired ready adjustment may be made to accommodate boot-trees of different lengths, and the changeable supportingblocks of wood as now employed may be dispensed with.
Heretofore in factories for'the manufacture of rubber boots it has been the practice to provide for the workmen a number of wooden blocks of from twenty to twenty-eight inches in length and about six or seven inches square, to be used as occasion required to manufacture the size of boot desired. Alarge number of such blocks are required in each shop, and much time is often lost inhunting up the proper block for use in special cases, and in using such supporting-block the Workman is required to spread his legs in order to avoid the blockfand is thus caused to work in a strained and cramped position, which in some cases will produce very injurious effects, which objections are entirely avoided by the use of my invention.
Figure 1 represents an elevation of my improved boot-tree rest. Fig, 2 represents an enlarged transverse section taken in the line Fig. 3 represents an enlarged transverse section taken in the line y g of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 represents an enlarged transverse section taken in the line a: a: of Fig. 1.
to end and loosely fits the standard B, and is provided .interiorly atone side with the longitudinal groove (1, which is adapted to receive the longitudinal rowof ratchet-teeth O, and at a slot 6 in the lower end of the sliding rest D is pivoted the catch E, which is adapted to engage with the teeth 0 and thus hold the sliding rest D in its set position.
The boot-tree is provided with a ring it, (shown in dotted lines,) as usual in trees for the manufacture of rubber boots, the said ring being adapted to enter the opening '5 at the top of the rest D, and the spreading-head g of the same serves to form a proper support for the fiat bottom of the tree.
IVhen' the Workman passes from one style of boot to another, he has simply to adjust the height of the rest D by moving the catch E to the proper notch on the standard B.
I claim as my invention The combination, with the supportingstandard B, provided with a baseA and having the longitudinal row of teeth C, of the sliding rest D, provided with a central opening adapted to receive the standard B and the ring of the boot-tree, a groove d, adapted to receive the teeth 0, the spreading-head g, and the pivoted catch E, which is adapted to engagewith the teeth 0 to hold the sliding rest in its set position, substantially as described. JOHN F. OBRIEN.
