Description

(Nb'ModeL) S. BOWMAN. ATTACHMENT FOR CORN PLANTERS.
No. 460,739. Patented Oct. 6,;1891.
1932,9161 Scion M Bowman.
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
'soLoN M. BOWMAN, or TIMBERVI'LLE, VIRGINIA.
ATTACHMENT FOR CORN-PLANTERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 460,739, dated October 6, 1891.
Application filed June 25, 1391. Serial No. 397,515. (No modelfi To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SoLoN M. BOWMAN, a
' citizen of the United States, residing at Timscribed, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the runner of a corn-planter to which my invention has been applied. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same.- Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional View.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures.
The runner, which is designated by 1, is of ordinary construction, the rear end being bifurcated to receive thelower end of the seedspout 2.
3 designates a vertically-arranged rod, the lower end of which is bifurcated, the arms 4 4 of said rod being connected by means of bolts or rivets 5 with the mold-boards or gage-plates 6 6, which are arranged at the sides of the runner. The-upper end of the bifurcated rod 3 is screw-threaded and is extended through a perforation in a bracket 8, which is mounted at the upper end of the standard of the runner. The said bracket 8 is U-shaped, and it also serves for the attachment of the upper ends of a pair of rods 9 9, the lower ends of which are connected with the gage-plates 6 6 near the rear ends of the latter and extended inwardly to form brackets 10, which rest against the sides of the runner, thus keeping the mold-boards or gage-plates 6 6 at a proper distance from the latter.
The upper ends of the rods Sandi are provided with nuts 11 above and below the U- shaped bracket 8 to enable the said rods to tion will be readily understood from the foreygoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. Myimproved mold-boards or gage-plates may be readily applied to the runner of acorn-planter of ordinary construction, and by means of the said gage-plates the runner may be adjusted to run more or less shallow, thus depositing the seed to any desired depth.
By my improvement the seeds are planted at a perfectly-uniform depth, regardless of the looseness or compactness of the soil, and yet, regardless of the depth to which'they are planted, to cover them uniformly. By this means a uniform germination takes place. All clods, loose stones, &c., are swept to one side, thus leaving a smooth track for the packing or covering wheel usually employed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. In a corn-planter, the combination, with the runner, of a vertically-adjustable bifurcated rod straddling the said runner, and the mold-boards or gage-plates connected with the lower ends of the arms of said rod, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the runner, of the vertically adjustable bifurcated rod, the mold-boards or gage-plates connected with the lower ends of the arms of the same, and the brace connected with said bifurcated rod near its lower end and engaging the front edge of the runner, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
The combination, with the runner, of the U -shaped bracket arranged at the upper end of the standard of the same, the verticallyadjustable bifurcated rod mounted in said bracket, the mold-boards or gage-plates conneoted with the lower ends of the arms of said bifurcated rod, and the rods connected with the rear ends of said mold-boards or gage-plates mounted adj ustably in the U- shaped bracket at the upper end of the runplates and having, laterally-extending lower nonstandard and having laterally-extending ends bearing against the sides of the runner, lower ends bearing against the sides of the substantially as and for the purpose set forth. runner, substantially as and for the purpose In testimony that I claim the foregoing r 5 5 set forth. my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in 4. The combination, with the runner, of the presence of two witnesses. Vertically adjustable bifurcated rod, the
1nold-boards or gage-plates connected with SOLON M. BOWMAN. the lower ends of the arms of said rod, and \Vitnesses: 10 the vertically-adjustable rods connected with J. M. CRABILL,
the rear ends of said mold-boards or gage- SAMUEL FENCE.
