UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
SIMON FEHR, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
BREAD, MEAT, AND VEGETABLE SLICER.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of- Letters Patent No. 460,715, dated October 6, 189.1. Application filed May 18,'1891-v Serial No. 393.097. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, SIMON FEHR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Gincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bread, Meat, and Vegetable Slicers, of which the following is a specication.
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap, compact, and reliable device for slicing bread, meat, and vegetables, which is easily operated and not liable to get out of order.
The invention consistsin the peculiarcombinations and arrangements of the several parts, illustrated in the accompanying drawings in connection with which the invention will be first fully described with sutlicient accuracy to enable those skilled in the art to construct my device, after which its novel features will be particularlyreferred to and pointed out in the claims. Y
Referring' to the drawings, in which like parts are indicated by similar reference-letters wherever they occur throughout the various views, Figure l is a front elevation of a device embodying my invention., Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional View taken through line y y, Fig. l, looking to the right. Fig. 3 is a top or plan view. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of the sliding knife-carrying member, taken through line :I: of Fig. l, with the coupling-boss of the regulatingscrew shown in axial section to illustrate the swivel-joint of the regulating-screw.
The device consists of a stationary member upon which the articles to be sliced are held, which member is to be secured to a table or other support, and a knife-carrying member fitted to slide in guides in the stationary membel'. Thestationary member is, for convenience in molding, made in four pieces-'L'. e., the platform A, the side bracket-pieces B B', and the top rail C. The sliding member consi sts of fourparts-the knife-carrying' member D, the movable gage part D', the regulatingscrew E, and handle F. The part D, which consists of top and bottom rails united by a light perforated web, terminates in an inclined seat d2, to receive the knife-blade G. The part D has rearwardly-projectingspurs d3, which pass through perforated lugs d4 formed on the rails d CZ', to guide it when adjusted in relation to the knife G by the adjusting-screw E, which is tapped through the yoke d5, which yoke is, as shown, cast integral with the rails d d and their uniting web. The screw is swivel-jointed to the part D by the coupling-boss d, by a collar which bears upon the top of the boss, and a washer which is held against its under side by a screw which is tapped into the end ot' the screw E, as clearly shown in Fig. 4. The inner edge of the movable part D bears against aledge CF, which has the same inclination as the guide-spurs d3. The inclined edge dsofthe movable part D is beveled from the rear to discharge the sliced pieces from the rear of the device. f
The operation of the device is as follows: The platform A being secured rigidly to a table or other support, and the movable part D being adjusted by the screw E the proper distance from the knife to Agive the desired thickness of slice, the article to be sliced (a loaf of bread, t'or instance) is held by theoperator upon the platform, with the left hand, against the bracket B and the part D. The operator now having' hold of the handle F pushes the sliding knife-carrying member forward, severing a slice from the loaf. T he sliding memberis then retracted, theloaf'again fed in against the part D', and the operation repeated as often as desired. W'hen small vegetables are to be sliced, a number of them may be placed upon the platform, and fed forward by a follower.
It will be seen from the foregoing that my device can be very cheaply constructed, as there are no parts that require machine-it ting except tapping the yoke for the adjustingscrew and cutting -the thread on the screw.
lVhat I claim as new is- 1. The combination of the stationary platform having' end 4brackets and guideways for the sliding part, the knife-carrying member fitted to slide within said ways, the inclined knife secured to said sliding part, and the part D', having its inner edge inclined cor` respondingly to the inclination of the knife and adjustable with relation to the knife, and the adjusting-screw E, tapped through a yoke in the stationary part and swivel-jointed to the movable part, substantially as shown and described.
IOC
2.,The combination, substantially as hereinbefore set forth, of the platform A, brackets B B', and rails @,uniting,` the bracket, said platform and rails having guideways to receive L sliding knife-carrying member, the knife-carrying member D,hevng guide-rails d d to fit the ways in the stationary part and perforated lugs d and yoke d5, Jche inclined knife G, secured to the pert D, the Ldro justable part D, having inclined edge ZS and the handle F, secu red to the rem of the part D. 15
