E. L. MOCONAUG-HY. PNEUMATIC BILLIARD TABLE.
No. 460,592. Patented Oct. 6, 1891.
ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT Orrrcn.
EDlVIN L. MCOONAUGHY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
PNEUMATIC BlLLlARD-TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 460,592, dated October 6, 1891. Application filed December 2, 1890. Serial No. 373,333. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, EDWIN L. MCOONAUGHY, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Pneumatic Billiard-Table, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of this invention is to provide a compact neat portable game-board whereon a game for amusement may be played by the propulsion of balls on the board, the propelling force being a jet of\air so applied as to direct one ball against another and locate one or more balls in pockets or cavities in the surface of the board.
To this end my invention consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts, as is hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Figure 1 is a plan View of the board with its glazed top broken and balls on the board;
and Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken through the center, as indicated by the line 2 2 in Fig. 1.
There is a preferably circular table A provided, which is mounted upon three short legs a, that have their upper ends cut with screwthreads to permit an adjustment for length, whereby the table may be leveled when on an uneven place, it being of advantage to have the device horizontally located when in use. Around the table A a cushion-wall B is erected, and upon a rabbeted edge of said wall a transparent cover 0 of glass is located. There are series of cupped depressions b, termed pockets, formed in the surface of the table A, which are preferably arranged in radial rows. Each pocket I) is given a different number, which designating-numerals are each marked plainly aside of the pocket it is to identify, and in the bottom of the pockets small perforations c for the escape of air are formed. The balls d ef are of a proper size and made of a light material, such as cork, one being preferably colored to distinguish it from the others, and in number may be increased or diminished to two, if preferred. There are a series of apertures g formed in the cushionwall B at such a height that their centers will lie in about the same horizontal plane with the axes of the balls d e f.
As a convenient means for producing a propelling-jet of air the ordinary jet-blower D is preferably used, which, having an elastic airchamber h and a small nozzle h, will, when placed to insert the nozzle in one of the apertures g, produce a forcible air-jet, if the airchamber is compressed, that may be directed against the ball nearest to the nozzle h and drive said ball'against another ball to carrom on it or be rolled gently to locate the ball impinged within a pocket.
The pockets b should have such a depth and breadth compared to the diameter of the balls (1 cf that any one of the latter named may be readily unseated from the pocket it occupies when a jet of air is directed at it or the pocketed ball is struck by a subsequently-projected ball.
The game consists in the skillful propulsion of the balls on the table A, so as to secure the highest aggregate number of the pockets filled by said balls with a certain number of jets or air-puffs that are allowed to each contestant.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with a table having a series of cupped pockets in its top face, a cushion border-wall having spaced apertures therein, and a transparent top plate on said border-wall, of a series of balls within that may be moved by air-jets through said apertures, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a table having a cushion border-wall and pockets on its top face, of a set of balls to be moved when impinged upon by an air-jet, and an air-jet blower that is adapted to engage any of a series of apertures in the cushion-wall and propel a ball by an issuing air-jet, substantially as set forth.
The combination, with a table having a series of cupped pockets in its top face, a cushion border-wall having spaced apertures therein, and a transparent top plate on said border-wall, of a series of balls within that may be moved by air-jets through said apertures, and an air-jet blower, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination, with a table, a series of spaced and numbered pockets thereon, a vertical border-Wall that is adapted to cushion balls, a glazed top plate, and adjustable legs, of a set of light balls which may be rolled by a puff of air, and an air-blower having a nozzle which will enter any of a series of pel'fora- 1o lions made in the bOWlGT-Wflll, substantially as set forth.
