N0. 460,450. Patented Sept. 29,1891.
A7'TORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHRISTIAN SCHMALZRID, OF DONALDSONVILLE, LOUISIANA DUMPING-CAR.
SPEGIFIC'A'IION forming pa.rt 0f Letters Patent N0. 460,450, dated September 29, 1891.
Application file(l J'uly 1, 1891. Serial N0. 898,122. (N0 model.)
T0 all w7wm zlt may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN SCHMALZRID, of Donaldsonville, in the parish of Ascension and State 0f Louisiana, have invented a 118W and Im proved Dumping-Gar, 0f whieh the following is a full, 0102m, and exa-ct description.
This invent'ion relates t0 durnping 0x filting cars which dump their load from the side at the t0p 0f the body 0f the car. It is applicable t0 hauling'and dumping 0001 and vari- 0ns materials; but is more espeeially designed f01 the hauling 0f sugar-cane frorn the field 130 the mill and ehe qui0k dumping 01 discharging 0f said 02m0 0nto the usual 01 any suitable earrier While in motion, and said invention, f01' convenience sake and by way 0f illustmtion, will here be described ac0ordingly.
The invention consists in a raising 2LI1. 10W- ering car-body in conneetion with a truck, 0n ehe wheel 01 base-frame of which it rests wl1en not requiring 130 be tilted, but fron1 which 113 is raised when necessary to tilt 01 dump. In also ineludes special means f0r mising and lowering the car-body and f0r tiloing it laterally t0 dump When needed, substantially as l1ereinafter described, and 1n010 partieularly pointed out in the claims.
Reference ls to be had t0 the accompanying drawings, forming a part 0f this speeifieation,
in which similar letters 0f referen0e indicate.
corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 represents a partly broken and sectional side elevation 0f a dumping-ear embodying 1ny invenoion; Fig. 2, an 011d elevati0n 0f the same; Fig. 3a transverse section up0n the line x 00 in Fig. 1 looking toward tl1e left, and Fig. 4 a similar section in part: on the sanie line x 00 looking towztrd the right.
A indicates tl1e car-body, 0f polygonal 01 other suitable shape ab its bottom, in transverse section and provided at its ends with longitudinally-oentral outwardly-protmuling trunnions b b, that pass fre0ly through rotating eccentrics B B. These eccentrics virtually f0rm t-he bearings f01 the trunnions b b when the car-body is being tilted laterally; but they in their turn are supported in 01 011 slotted standards O O, open above and projecting upward from the frame D 0f the truck, whieh is provided With running-wheels E E, t0 facilitate the hauling of the cm and its load. Thus the standards C C serve, tln0ugh the intervention of the eccentrics B B, to bear 0r Support tl1e trunnions, and these standards being left open ab the t0p 0f the slot c, in whieh tl1e eecentric B ab either end sits. Provision is made f0r lifting 0ff the carbody from the truek-franne and transferringit ont0 a suitable eart-frame for the purpose of running1't down between rhe rows of cane and bringing it outon the head-land. Theloaded ezw-body then may be lifted out by means 0'f a erane 01' other sultable means and be placed 011 its truck t0 avoid unloading.
WVhen the loaded car-body A is 011 the truck,
the eccentries B B are turned d0wn by mis-' ing levers F F, attached so 01 integral With them. This causes the whole weighb 0f tl1e loaded cam-body t0 rest up0n the base-fmme D 0f the truck 01 sills thereof, which prevents any possible tilting of the car-body while the load is being hanled 01 when the whole ear is turning a curve.
When the 0ar is brough up alongside 0f the canenarrier 01' tl1e b0dy of the car is1equired t0 be tilted, tl1e eocentrics B B are turned upward by turning the levers F F downward, and if necessary engaging the latter With pivoted slotted pawls (Z d. This rai ses the car-body A sufficiently high to allowitto' clear the base-frame D 0f the truck. The wh0le weight 0f the car-body then rests 0n the trunnions 01 eecentrics B B. The 0ar-body can then be tilted laterally by ios trunnions t0 dump 01 discharge its load from the top at either side either by direcbly pulling it 0Ver 01 011 one side by the aid of arope G, fastened ab its 0ne end 0nto tl1e 0ne side of the 0mbody and connected a1; ius other end with a longitudinal shaft H underneaoh the car-body, 'which shaft may 100 rotated by cranks applied t0 its opposite ends, and lms ratchet-wheelsf f on it for pawls e e t0 engage with 130 hold the ear-body at any desired angle. A pitchchain I is also arranged 130 pass down the sides of Ehe car-body and underneath its bott0m, being hitched at its tw0 ends 130 Ehe sides of 13110 body. This chain engages With a toothed wheel J 011 the shaft H, so that when lacemlly tilting the ear-body by hand fhe chain I will turn the shaft and ratchets f f f0r the pawls e e t0 hold uhe car-body in any desired position. After the 0m has been emptied of its load ehe eccentrics B B are again lowered and the car-body is made to again rest directly 011 the base-frame of the truck, and is supported independently of its trumnions, which protects the ca1 from being upset 01' turned over 011 a narrow-gage track.
Having thus deseribed my invention, I c1aim as new and desire to seeure by Letters Patent l. The combination, With a car-truck, 0f a raising m1d lowering dumping-car body supported thereon by end trunnions and operating when raised 130 swing or ti1t laterally, but immovably resoing when lowered on said truek, substantially as specified.
2. In a dumping-car cornposed of a truck and a raising andlowering laterally swinging 01 ti1ting car-body having trunnions on its opposite ends, the combination, with said body und. with up1ight slotted standards 011 tl1e baseirame 01: the truck, of eecentries capable of being turned 01 rotated, receiving the trumnions free1y within them, and arranged t0 Werk within the slotted standards, whereby the car-body mayba 1aised t0 quickly and laterally ti1t in either direction 01' belowered to immovably engage Wih the truek-frame, essentially as set forth.
3. The combination, with the base-frmne of the truck, having opposite end-slotted standards, and the raising and 1owering 1a.tera1ly swinging 01' tilting car-bodv, of a longitudinally-arranged shaft beneath the said body provided with one 0r more ra-tchets anal pawls engaging therewith, means for raising the cmbody to admit of it being tilted, and means eonnect-ing said shaft and car-body for tilting t-he latter, substantially' aus specified.
4:. In a dumping-car f01' hau1ing and latera1ly dumping various materials in either direction, tbe combination of the car-truek,the mising and lowering and laterallyswinging car-body mounted thereon, provided with end trnnnions, rooatable eccentrics carried by the txuek and receiving the trunnions freely within them for raising und lowering the earbody, the longitudinal shaft; below the eurbody, With its ratchets, pawls, and independent toothed wheel, and the pitched chain attac-hed to zu1d passingunder the car-body and engaging With said whee1 f01 operating said shaft; to hold Lhe ear-body at any desired ang1e when tilted, substantially as specified.
