' G. H. ALLEN. HAND PRINTING ROLLER.
Patented Sept. 29, 1891.
WIT TN sszs.
v lzvvzwraz Mop UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE H. ALLEN, OF CLINTON NEIV YORK.
HAND PRINTING-ROLLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 460,173, dated September 29, 1891. Application filed January 26, 1891. Serial No. 379.060. (No model-J To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. ALLEN, of Clinton, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand Printing-Rollers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in hand printing-rollers.
The particular object of this invention consists in providing a hand-printing roller of simple and effective construction, and which is cheaply made and easily repaired.
In the drawings which accompany and form part of this specificatiomand in which similar figures of reference refer to corresponding parts in the several views, Figure 1 shows a top view of the hand-printer. Fig. 2 shows a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 shows the frontendelevationof thedevice. Figxtshows a section taken on line A B of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 shows a modified form of construction, in which two inking-rollers are used. Fig. 6 shows a spring, which may be substituted in this device.
In constructing the device a handle 1 is provided having projecting arms 2 2, which is journaled at 3, the printing-roller at, which is provided with suitable printing-surface. On printing-roller 4: is provided a stop. 5, adapted to engage stationary stop 6 on the handle-arm. Aninking-roller 7 is provided mounted on shaft 7 in slotted bearings 8 in the handle-arms 2. For retracting the printing-roller to its normal position after use and also pressing the inking roller or rollers upon the printing-rollers, I provide an elastic band 9, connected to the printing-roller 4 at 4, and passing thence around a pulley 10 on the shaft 7 of the inking-roller, and to and attached to upright arms 11, formed or socured upon the handle.
In the case of the construction shown in Fig. 5, where an additional inking-roller is used, the frame is provided with upward pro jections 12, and the roller is mountedin slotted bearings 8.
The operation of the device is substantially as follows: The printing-roller4 is held in its normal position, with stop 5 engaging stop 6 by the tension of bandsJ. IVhen the roller-I is brought into contact with the surface which it is desired to print, it is rolled forward until it has made a revolution, or nearly so, and upon being raised the bands 9 immediately retract the roller 4 to its starting position, and at the same time press the inking-roller upon the printing-roller.
The spring 9" (shown in Fig. 6) may be used instead of bands 9.
WVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, in a hand-printer, of the printing-roller, the forked handle there for, the inkingroller and elastic bands or springs secured to the printing-roller and passing around the shaft of the inking-roller and secured to the handle, substantially as Set forth.
2. The combination, in a hand-printer, of the forked handle, the printing-roller journaled in the fork of the handle, the inkingroller journaled in slotted bearings, and the elastic band orspring secured to the printingroller and passing around the shaft of inkingroller and secured to uprights on the handle, substantially as set forth.
3. The combinatiomin a hand-printer, of the forked handle, the printing-roller journaled in the fork of the handle, the inkingroller journaled in slotted bearings, the elastie bands or springs secured at one end to the printing-roller and at the opposite end to uprights above the printing-roller and passing around pulleys on the inking'roller shaft, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have afiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE H. ALLEN.
