HERMANN LINDEMANN, OF KLINGENTHAL, GERMANY.
METHOD OF STRINGINYG GUITARS, 80C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 458,789, dated September l, 1891.
Application tiled April 22, 1891.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMANN LINDEMANN, of the town of Klingenthal, in the Kingdom of Saxony, Empire of Germany, a citizen of the German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stringing Guitars and Mandolins, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in stringed musical instruments, especially guitars, mandolins, banjos, the.
The object of my invention is to provide an instrument of this kind which is so constructed that the strings can easily be pressed upon the finger-board at the frets, even for the most complicated combinations, and which also permits producing new combinations of sounds, such as could not be produced with such instruments heretofore.
The invention consists in a stringed musical instrument, such as a guitar, mandolin, banjo, &c., provided with the usual iingerboard and frets on the face of the neck, and a similar Enger-board provided with frets on the back of the neck, the strings on the iinger-boards on the face and back of the neck together passing over the opening in the body of the instrument in the usual manner.
The invention also consists in the construction and combination of parts and details which will be fully described hereinafter, and finally pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure I is a face view of a guitar provided with my improvement. Fig. II is a side view of the same. Fig. III is an elevation and section, on an enlarged scale, of myimproved neck for stringed musical instruments, parts being broken out. Fig. IV is a longitudinal sectional view on the line 4 4 of Fig. III, and Fig. V is a longitudinal sectional view on the line 5 5 of Fig. III.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The neck a, of the usual construction, is provided on its face with the finger-board A, having the usual frets b, the strings passing over said iinger-board A being secured to the pegs Serial No. 389,894. (No model.)
ends of the strings s are secured, in the usual manner, to pegs in the bridge D on the front of the body G of the instrument. The neck a is provided with a lateral extension a', on the back of which the iinger-board A is formed, on which the frets b are secured. Strings s pass over said additional iingerboard A and their upper ends are secured to pegs d in the head A2, said strings also passing over the face of the body G and having their lower ends secured to pegs in the bridge l). In the instrument shown five strings s pass over the nger-board A on the front of the neck a, and three strings s pass over the finger-board A', formed on the back of said neck. The strings s', passing over the be pressed against said finger-board by .means of the thumb of the left hand, the strings s on the front of the neck being pressed on the finger-board by means of the remaining iingers of the left hand. The strings s pass through apertures m in the upper part of the extension a. An instrument of this kind is especially adapted for solo playing, as the scope of its harmony is materially increased, as is also the volume of sound and the beau ty of the same.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters PatentA In a stringed musical instrument, the combination, with a body and neck, of a vlingerboard on the front of the neck and another iingenboard on the back of the neck, and strings passing over said ngeieboards, the strings on the back Enger-board passing through apertures in the top of the neck, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claiin the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
