Be it known that I, GEORGE HANCOOK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident 0f Providence, in the State 0f Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Elevators, 0f which the following isa specification.
The object of my invention is to provicle a perfeetly safe passenger-elevator which is operatecl by means of revolving screws instead 0f ropes; am] it consists in the improved 00mst-ruction and arrangement 0f the guiding nuts ancl screws, as hereinafter fully sei; fo1tb.
Figure 1 represents a freut elevatiou 0f an elevator embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 represents a detail section showing the comstruction of the adjustable nut.

The screws O a1e journaled with their upper ends in the bearings e 0f the bar F, 01' in a frame attaehecl 130 the Wall of the building, the saicl bar being preferably supported by means of 'the parallel upright rods G G, which are secured to the becl-frame D, so that in this case tl1e elevator will beself-supported and be independenn of the building in which it is placecl.
Ab about the midclle line of he bottom 0f the car is attachecl the bar B, provided ab its opposite ends With tl1e nuts B B, which are adapted to reoelve the screws C O,and ab the top of the car and in line With the bar B is attaehecl the cross-bar A, provicled a1; iis opposite encls with the nuts f f,which have their axes in 1ine witl1 the axes of the nuts B B, and Within which are placecl the acljustable nuts H H, as shown enlarged in tl1e section,Fig. 2, the said nuts H H being provicled with an inner screw-threacl adapted t0 fit the thread 0f the serew C, and an outer screw-thread g, adapted t0 fit the screw-thread of the nut f, ancl by turning the nuts H within the nuts f 0f the bar A the proper adjustrnent relatively t0 each other can be made to prevent the cramping of the screws C C within the nuts B B and H H, the nuts H H being retained in their adjusted position by means 0f the set-screw h, which passes through the side of the nut f and bears with its point against the sicle of the nul: H. The several nuts above cleseribed may also be made in halves in 01- der 10 facilitate the reacly attachmen of 1Jhe car t0 the screws Ol its ready removal therefrom.
I claim as my invention- The combination,with the revolving serews C O, of an elevator-car A, providecl with tl1e cross-bar B, having thereon the nuts B B, and the cross-bar A,having thereon the nuts ff, the nuts H H, provided wirl1 an outer screw-thread adaptecl to fit the threadof the serew O, and the screw h f01 holding the nut H in .its adjustecl position, substantially as described.
