SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 456,721, dated July 28, 1891.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, AMos H. CRAWFORD, of Liverpool, in the county ot' Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lanterns, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.

My present invention relates to the permanent attachment of match-safes to lanterns; and it consists, essentially, in the combination, with a lantern, of a match-safe secured stationarily to a fixed part of the lantern, and a cover for said match-safe detached from and carried on a movable part of the lantern to al'ltomatically open and close said match-Safe, as hereinafter more fully described, and set forth in the claims.

In the annexed drawings, Figures l., 2, and 3 are elevations of lanterns provided with different forms of globe-holders and illustrating the adaptation of my invention to said lanterns.

L represents the lamp, from which extend the usual tubest t, which form the main frame of the lantern and have attached to them the handle z. and the central vertical branch tube t', which latter carries the shield s over the globe (l. The globe-holder is usuallyformcd of Wire, and consists, mainly, of a ring a, embracing the base of the globe, and rods Z) I), extending 'from said ring either to the shield s, as shown in Fig. 1 of the dra\v,ings,ortoaring a, embracing the upper end of the globe, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings. In either case the globe-holder is movable to and from the lamp. In Fig. l it is arranged movably vertically, in Fig. 2 it is arranged to swing with its base laterally from the lamp, and in Fig. 3 the top of the globe -holder swings laterally.

c represents a match-safe, which I secure preferably in an upright position permanently either to one of the tubes t, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. l of the drawings, or to the side of the lamp, as shown by full lines in the drawings, or to any other fixed part of the lantern, either by soldering orother suitable means.

(Z denotes the cover or cap of the 1natchsafe. This cover I attach to any part of the lantern which is arranged movably to and from the lamp, preferably to the before-described globe-holder, either to one of the vertical rods b, as shown in Figs. l and 2 ot' the drawings, or to the lower ring (t, as represented in Fig'. 3 of the drawings. In either case the said cover is to be attached in such relative position as to cause it to become automatically seated upon the match-safe in the operation of placing the globe upon the lamp, as represented in Fig. 3 of the drawings, and to be removed from the matchsafe by the res lnoval of the globe from the lamp, as shown in Figs. land 2 of the drawings.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l.. The combination, with a lantern, of a matchsafe secured stationarily to a fixed part of said lantern, and a cover for said matchsafe detached therefrom and carried on a movable part ot` the lantern to automatically open and close the match-safe, as set forth.

2. The combination, with a lantern having its globe-holder movable from the lamp, of a match-sate attached to the side ot the lamp, and a cover for said match-sate attached to the aforesaid globe holder, substantially as described and shown,
