SAD-IRON.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 454,820, dated June 23, 1891.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, GUSTAVOS HEIDEL, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Sad-Irons, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improved means of attaching the handle portion of a separable sad-iron to the body portion; and my invention consists in features of noveltyhereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.

Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the body portion of the iron, and 2 the handle portion, the latter consisting of a plate 3, having standards 4, to which is secured a handhold 5. On the under side of the plate 3 of the handle portion are lugs or projections 6, (shown best in Fig. IV,) which are adapted to engage lugs or projections 7 on the upper surface of the body portion of theiron, as shown bestin Fig. III. The lugs are so shaped as to form dovetail connection, as shown at 8, Fig. II. In putting the parts together the handle portion is placed with its lugs 6 in line with the lugs of the body portion, and

causing the lugs 6 to enter between the lugs 7. It is necessary to providea means by which the two parts will be held from relative end movement when thus connected, and my invention relates particularly to a device for doing this, and which will be cheap, durable, and easily as well as quickly operated.v It consists of a stem 9, having a threaded connection with a perforation 10 in the plate 3 of the handle portionof the iron. (See Figs. I and V.) On the lower end of the stem 9 I prefer to form a projection 11 in the form of a frustum of a cone, which fits in an opening or depression 12 in the'body portion of the iron. The shape of the opening 12 should correspond to the shape of the head 11 on the lower end of the stem; and it will be seen that when the stem is screwed down a snug fit will always exist between the head and the opening in which it fits, so that the stem will not be liable to-Work loose. The stem 9 has a head 14 by which it is manipulated.

I claim as myinvention- In a'separable sad-iron, the combination of the body portion, the handle portion, lugs by which the body portion and handle portion are united, astem 9, having threaded connection with the handle portion and provided with a tapering head 11, and said body portion having an opening to receive the tapering head of the pin, substantially as set forth.
