Description

, (No Model.)
H. BLASSBERG.
UMBRELLA ATTAGHMENT.
No. 454,395. Patented June 16,1891.
Hugo 3142535019 5y n brfflt UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HUGO BLASSBERG, OF \VALD, GERMANY.
UMBRELLA ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 454,395, dated June 16, 1891. Application filed February 19, 1891. Serial No. 382,020. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HUGO BLASSBERG, a subject of the King of Prussia, residing at WVald, Province of Rhenish Prussia, in the Kingdom of Prussia and German Empire, have invented new and useful Improvements in Umbrella-Jens, self-acting through a spring, of which the following is a specification.
For the purpose of holding the ribs of u inbrellas movable or slidable bells or holders have heretofore been used which are either subjected in various ways to the action of a spring or are movable along a bushing or 001- lar secured to the umbrella-stick.
This invention relates to a bell springing into itself, as shown in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the bell or holder. Fig. 2 shows a side elevation of the bell or holder.
The bell or holder consists of a compressible spirallybonvoluted metal strip a, which at the narrowest Winding is fastened to the stick and at the other end at n,Fig. 2, at the largest winding is riveted together and embraces the umbrella-ribs r. The bell thus formed can be shortened to release the ribs, since by pulling upward at the lower end the windings slide into one another, whereby the edge passes away from the rib ends. By reason of its elasticity the bell on being released resumes its original length.
In addition to a neat appearance and durability, the bell is of advantage, since it can be made cheaply, handled readily, and secured easily in place. Furthermore, it is readily fitted to diiterent thicknesses of stick, since the narrow winding embracing the stick can be readily widened by distension to fit thicker sticks or contracted by being turned or wound to smaller diameter to fit thinner sticks. The umbrella-stick is indicated by the letter .9.
I am aware that an umbrella-tip has been composed of a cupshaped tube inclosing a spring and adapted to yield for releasing the tips; but such does not constitute my invention.
I am also aware that a convoluted spring is not of itself novel, and such therefore I do not broadly claim.
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the ribs and stick of an umbrella, of a compressible rib-holding bell consisting of a spirally-convoluted elastic strip having one extremity rigidly attached to the stick and the opposite extremity riveted to a convoluted part of the elastic strip for preserving this portion in proper form to surround and inclose the tips of the ribs, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto setmy hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HUGO BLASSBERG.
