TYPE-HOLDING DEVICE FOR TYPE-WRITING MACHINES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 454,271, dated June 16, 1891.

To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, CHARLES L. HIBBARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ce dar Rapids, in the county of Linn and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Type-Holding Devices for Type-WVriting Machines; andI do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

v The object of my invention is to provide a type-writer with a convenient device for holding the type firmly in position for cleaning and without the necessity for soiling the fingers in the operation.

The invention consists, essentially, in. a notched plate suitably and movably attached to the frame of the type-writer, the notch being adapted to catch under the typehead of the type-bar and hold it while being cleaned.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a view of a device embodying my invention in perspective. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the same as applied to a Remington type-writer, and Fig. 3 is a similar View of the sal e as applied to a Oaligraph.

The most practical and efficient method of cleaning the type of a type-writer, and the one most commonly used, is to brush out the accumulated ink and lint with a common tooth-brush or the like. Without some device to hold the type-bar, however, the operation is attended with some difliculty and inconvenience, it being necessary to hold it with the thumb and finger of the disengaged hand, thereby soiling the fingers unpleasantly. Furthermore, this manner of holding the type is unsatisfactory, not being sufficiently firm and tenacious. This invention is designed to supply an attachment for a type-writer for this purpose which may remain 011 the machine without being in'the way. I

In the oppositeend of the plate is a V-shaped notch 0, adapted to straddle the neck of the type, and as the type is drawn into the notch hold it firmly in position. In practice I prefer to hold the type by drawing on the holder, and I have thereforeillustrated the V-notch as opening into a hole e through the plate. In case it is desired to push on the holder to retain the type, the notch may be formed in the end of the plate simply, as indicated by the dotted lines.

The device is adapted to be attached to the frame-of a Remington machine 0 by a screw already on the machine, and when in'position it lies just above the ink-ribbon. WVhen not in use, it is simply drawn outwardly and is then entirely out of the way. For attachment to a Caligraph frame the angle of the plate A is reversed, so as to coincide with a screw in the standard D of the carriage-guide on the said frame E.

The device, as will be seen, is extremely simple, and may be attached to a writingmachine at a trifling expense, adding greatly to the comfort and convenience of the operation for which it is designed.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim asnew, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1.
