IMPROVED WEATHER-STRIP.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 45,320. (lzltd DLCGIlllJOl 6, 1364 'To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS CowDEN, of Norristown, Montgomery county, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in the Construction of Teather-Strips; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention consists inthe peculiar manner, described hereinafter, of constructingl a weather-strip ot' the class which consists of two pieces hinged together, the upper piece being secured to the door and the lower piece being depressed at the lower edge by contact with a projection on the door-frame when the d )or is closed.
My method of constructing the improved weatherstip has been designed with a view t) the attainment of strength, simplicity, and neatness.
In order to enable others to make and apply my invention, I will now proceed to describe the manner of constructing the same.
On reference to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specilication, Figure 1 is a vertical section of the lower part ot' a door and doorway with my improved weather-strip; Fig. 2, a front view of the strip; Fig. 3, a transverse section on the line l 2, Fig. l; and Fig. 4, a transverse section on the line3 4, Fig. 1.

A' represents the lower part ot' an ordinary door, and B the base ot' the door-frame, on which is a strip, a, situated at a point immediately below the door, as usual. To the inside of the door is secured the upper portion, l), of the weather-strip, which is made ot' wood and in the form represented in Fig. l,

space within which is filled with a weight, i, of lead or other heavy material, a portion ot' the wood composing the piece E being cut away to make room for this weight. These weights are so situated in respect to the pins f as to depress the upper end of the piece E and raise the lower edge clear ot the base B of the door frame at all times, excepting when the door is closed and the piece E is in contact with a projection, K, attached to one of the jambs of the door-frame, in which case the two pieces of the weather-strip are in such close contact with the base ofthe doorframe as to eifectuallyexclude from the room the wind and rain which may pass through the space beneath the door A.
It should be understood that the metal sockets are driven tightly onto the ends of the pieces D and E, and are, secured thereto by suitable pins or screws, these sockets thus preventing the pieces from being split, affording the best means of hinging them ett'ectually together and ot imparting a preponderance to the upper edge ofthe piece E.
I am aware that weatherstrips have been heretofore made in two pieces hinged together, the upper' piece being secured to the door and the lower piece being depressed by being brought into contact with a projection on the door-frame. I therefore wish it to be understood that I lay no broad claim to such a device, but that I limit my claim to the special mode described of constructing weatherstrips; that is to say- I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The piece D, withits sockets d,4 and the lips e, forming part of the said sockets, in combina tion with the piece E, its sockets h, and weights i within the said sockets, the whole being constructed and applied to a door and timeframe, as set forth.
