SIDNEY D. L. JACKSON, OF YOUNGSTOIVN, OHIO.
ADVERTISING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.453,190, dated June 2, 1891.
Application filed October 23, 1890. Serial No. 369,106. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SIDNEY D. L. J ACKSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Youngstown, in the county of Mahoniug and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is an improvement in advertising devices; and it consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown one form in which I have contemplated embodying my invention, and the same is fully disclosed in the following description and claims.
Referring to said drawings, Figure l is an exterior view of my improved advertising device, and Fig. 2 is a view showing the interior construction of the same.
The main feature of my invention is a frame adapted to be coyered with an advertisement or other notice or display matter to which public attention is to be called, the said frame being provided witha signal device for attracting attention adapted to be operated intermittently or continuously, as desired.
My said device is especially adapted for use as a portable advertising device and for campaign purposes when provided with some political inscription or device; but it maybe used for any purpose where it is found desirable or convenient, and is adapted to be used in daylight, or by. placing a source of illumination within the same and providing it with transparent or translucent sides it may be used as a transparency.
Reference being had to the drawings, A represents the frame of the device, which is of any desired shape or form, and has its sides provided with letters or, other display characters or devices, as indicated in Fig. 1. The frame A is provided with a handle or standard B, which is of any desired length, and by means of this rod or handle the frame is carried through the streets or wherever desired. Y
WVithin the frame Ais a signal device, consisting in this instance of an electric bell or signal 0 of any usual or ordinary construction. A suitable battery D is also secured within the frame A, preferably what is known as drybattery. In this instance I have shown the battery D secured on the bottom of the frame A by a brace d, and a wire 00 extends from one element of said battery down to a flexible contact-strip b. The other element of the battery is connected by wire 00 with the contact-point b, located adjacent to the flexible contact I), and the hell 0 is placed in circuit on this wire 00'. It will thus be seen that by uniting contacts I) b the circuit will be made through the bell, and the latter will be operated, and the person carrying the frame can, by pressing upon the flexible contact, operate the bell intermittently at will, or he may grasp the standard B in such manner as to hold said contacts in engagement and ring the bell continuously for a longer or shorter period, as desired. If desired, the contacts could be formed so as to remain in contact normally unless separated.
When the device is to be used at night, the walls ofthe frame upon which the advertising or other display characters are placed are made of such material that light will be transmitted through the same, and suitable lighting devices are placed within the frame, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
Instead of the electric signal, I might employ some other form of signal apparatus; but this is my preferred construction.
The use to which this device is to be put is apparent from the foregoing description. The frame is carried by means of the standard B through the streets or wherever desired, and the alarm or signal is operated continuously or intermittently to call the attention of the public to the display characters, ad-
vertising or otherwise, which are inscribed upon the sides of the frame.
As before stated, the device may be used during the day or at night, as found desirable.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with the frame provided with a supporting-standard of an electric signal device located within said frame,
ICO
aportable source of electricity connected with signal and source of electricity, and a circuitsaid signal, and a circuit-controller mounted closer under control of the carrier of the on said supporting-standard, substantially as frame, substantially as described.
described. In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in 5 2. The combination, with the frame propresence of two witnesses.
vided with the supporting-standard, of an SIDNEY L JACKSON electric signal device and source of electricity for operating the same located within the Witnesses:
said frame, a covering for said frame with JAMES SHAW, 10 display characters thereon concealing said M. S. LOGAN.
