SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 453,049, dated May 26, 1891u Application filed September 25, 1890. Serial No. 366,173. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that LJOHN JOSEPH NAVO, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in a Tent; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an ilnprovenlentin a tent, and its novelty will be fully understood from the following description and claims, when taken in connection with the annexed drawings; and the objects of my invention are to enable a tent to be raised or lowered from the sides in a summary manner. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing one side of tent raised. Fig. 3 is a side view of ridgepole. Fig. 4 is a view of side pole. Fig. 5 is a pin. Fig. 6 is a view of double block attached to tent. Fig. 7 is a view of single block attached to tent.

Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.

A indicates the side flaps of a tent, and B by a longitudinal ridge-pole C, which is supported in turn by oblique side poles D, with pole, and are sharpened at their lower ends, whereby they are adapted to penetrate the ground and anchor thetent-frame. Attached to the side oblique poles D are cords II, which have their other ends attached to staypins E, designed to afford an auxiliary anchorage for the frame. The ends of the ridgepole C are threaded, as better shown in Fig. 3, to receive wing-nuts F, which are adapted to prevent the side poles D from being displaced.

L indicates a double pulley-block, which is provided with four sheaves, as shown, and

has a central sleeve to receive the ridge-pole O, on which it is mounted about midway of the length thereof.

M indicates pulley-blocks, which are provided with two sheaves, and have a sleeve similar to that of block L to receive the ridgepole O, on which they are mounted adjacent to the ends thereof, and are also held in position by wing-nuts F.

G G indicate ropes, which are desi ned and adapted to furl the side flaps of the tent to open the same. These ropes G, of which there are preferably four employed, (two on each side of the tent,) are arranged .at each end thereof, and have one end secured to the ridge-pole 0, adjacent to the end thereof. They then lead downward and take through apertures in the side flaps adjacent to the lower edge thereof, thence lead up on the outside of flap and take over one of the pulleys in the blocks M, thence over one of the pulleys or sheaves in the block L, and thence down the outside of the tent to the ground, whereby they may be conveniently reached; audit will be seen that by this arrangement of parts and the construction thereof a cheap and convenientlyadjustable frame is provided, and by drawing on the ropes G, after the stay-cords have been detached from the pins E, it will be seen that the side flaps of the tent may be furled up to the ridge-pole of the frame and the tent thrown open.

Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a tent-frame, substantially as described, the combination, with a longitudinal ridge-pole threaded at its ends, of oblique side supporting-poles sharpened at their lower ends to penetrate the ground and provided at their upper ends with eyes to take over the ridge-pole, wing-nuts adapted to receive the threaded ends of the ridge-pole and re tain the oblique side poles thereon, and a stay-pin connected by a cord to the oblique side poles and adapted to operate as an auxiliary in anchoring the frame, all adapted to operate substantially as specified.
