I ammfimm dtorlww TATES SAMUEL IVHINERY, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
PORTABLE PAVING PLANT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 451,989, dated May 12, 1891.
Application filed December 30, 1889. Serial No. 3ii5A53. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL WHlNERY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Portable Paving Plant, of which the following is a specification.
In making asphalt pavements considerable apparatus is required, and heretofore it has been necessary to construct a plant at large expense in each place where pavement was to be laid. The dismantling of such a plant, the removal of such of the parts as could be again used, and reconstruction in another place involved somuch expense that the use of asphalt pavements was confined to the larger places where the amount of such pavement was to be laid was sufficient to justify the erection of a plant for that purpose alone.
It is the object of my invention to provide a paving plant so constructed, combined, and arranged that it may be readily removed from place to place without dismantling the various parts, and again made ready for operation without the delay and expense involved in constructing a plant of the kind heretofore in use.
My invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and specified.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a top plan view of my apparatus. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Figs. 3 and 4 are end elevations of the cars. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a portion of a car. Figs. 5 and 6 are cross-sections through the cars. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a portion of a car. Fig. 7 is a side elevation of car A. Fig. Sis a side elevation of car B.
A and B represent platform-cars provided with hinged sides a and Z2, adapted to be folded down to form an extension to the floor of the car when the apparatus is set up.
0 is a mixer-floor detachably connected with the floor of the car. The folding sides and this floor are supported by detachable supporting-frames consisting of trestles D, hav
ing legs d and braces 61. The legs are mountand its extended floor.
frames at the ends of the car do not extend across the car, but space is left for the draW- I by hangers ff and provided With a universal joint f between the cars to allow the machinery to be operated .when the cars are not upon an exact level or an absolutely straight track. By means of this shaft motion is communicated to a sand-elevator, sand-drums, and mixer-knives, as hereinafter specified.
At the end of the car A is placed a sandhopper G, having a bucket-elevator H running therefrom to a heater I on the car provided with rotating drums 2'. The elevator is operated from the line-shaft F through an upright shaft J, a horizontal shaft K, and a belt L. \Vhen the sand has been suficiently heated, it is delivered through a screen to a receiver or upon the floor of the car. At a convenient position to the side of car A is located the mixer-floor 0, having thereon a mixer M, provided with rotating mixingknives m, operated by a belt N, driven from the line-shaft.
A crane O is located upon the car A between the mixer and the delivery end of the sand-heaters, and has a traveling bucket 0, suspended from its arm, for conveying the heated sand to the mixer.
P is a jib-crane for raising the asphalt to the melting-tanks Q, situated at the opposite end of the car B from the engine. In these tanks the asphalt is melted and then drawn off by means of cocks q q into a bucket R, traveling on a removable race S to the mixer. A removable floor T connects the two cars.
I claim-- 1. In a portable paving plant, the cars A and B, having hinged sides adapted to form extensions of the floor and provided with detachable supporting-frames, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. Aportable paving plant consisting of an engine, a line-shaft driven thereby, and a mixer, sand-drums, and conveyer mounted upon railway-carshavinghingedsidesadapted to form extensions of the floor and provided With detachable supportin g-frames, the mixer, sand-drums, and conveyer being connected with and adapted to be operated by the line- (No Model.)
