PARALLEL-RU LER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 450,619, dated April 21, 1891.
Application filed July 18,1890- $erial No. 359,136. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED A. HUNTING, of Salem, county of Essex, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Parallel-Line Rulers, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters and. figures on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object to provide a parallel-line ruler of novel construction, as will be described, whereby parallel lines may be more quicklyand accurately made, myimproved instrument being especially adapted for use by draftsmen, architects, the.
In accordance with my invention the parallel-line ruler is composed of two members or parts connected together by an elastic con- Q nection, preferably a spiral spring, so as to ted the member a.
slide or move with relation to each other, one end of the said spring being connected to one member and the other end of the said spring to the other member, the movement of the members with relation to each other being limited by suitable stops, as will be described.
The particular features of my invention will be pointed out in the claim'at the end of this specification.
Figure 1 is a top or plan view of one form of a parallel-line ruler embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 an end view of the parallelline ruler shown in Fig. 1.
My improved parallel-line ruler consists of two members a a,and, as shown in Fig. 1,the member a is substantially T-shaped in form, and is provided with a slot o in which is fit- The member a is provided at its upper end with the straight-edge 2 and at its sides with the inclined edges 3 4E. The members a. a. are joined together by a flexible connection, shown as a spiral spring 1 one end of the said spring being secured to a hook I) on the member a, and the other end of the spring being secured to a hook b secured to or forming part of a T-shaped bar 19 extended across the slot a over the member a, and fastened at its ends, as 'by screws 5 to the member a. The hook I) is extended through a slot 11 in a T-shaped bar I), t'astened, as by screws b, to the member a, the said bar constituting a stop for the hook b to limit the movement of the member 0; in one direction. The member a is provided with a stop, herein shown as a slotted bar 0 at its lower end, the said bar being adjustable with relation to the cross-bar b by means of a setscrew or thumb -nut 0', whereby the movement of the member Ct with relation to the member a may be adjusted as desired.
In operation the draftsman or other operator may place his thumb on the adj ustingscrew 0 and one or more fingers on the memher a .and then move the member aim the direction of arrow 20 until the bar If meets the adjusting-bar c, and when the bar b is brought in contact with the bar 0 the straight-edge 2 is in position to draw or rule theline. YVhen the member Ct is moved in the direction of arrow 20, the spring b is elongated, and as soon tance it is desired the lines should be separated.
I claim The herein-described parallel-line ruler, it consisting of the member a, provided with a slot a and the member a, fitted in the said slot, the bar b secured to the member tr and provided with the slot 6 a stud or hook on the member a, extended through the slot a the bar b and an elastic connection secured to the hook on the member a and to the bar 19 and the adjustable stop or bar, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALFRED A. HUNTING.
