To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, EDUARD ZICKWOLFF, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and resident at Saarbriicken, Germany, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the valve-gear and cocks of direct-acting steam-pumps, and also to means for automatically stopping the pump when the water pressure passes a certain point and starting it again when the pressure falls below that point. I
The invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, substantially as hereinafter described and as claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification,
in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a direct-acting steam-pump embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional View on the line 00 00, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view 011 the line 1 y, Fig. 1. Figs. 5 and 6 are detail sectional views on lines '0 o and w to, Fig. 4. Fig. 7 is a cross-sectional view similar to Fig. 4, but showingin section the arrangement of the automatic stopping and starting mechanism.

A A designate the aligned cylinders of the pump, B B the pistons connected by the rod 0, and D D the cylinder-ducts extending from about the middle and along the bottom of each cylinder to opposite ends of the same,
the said ducts serving alternately as inlet and outlet ports. The inner ends of each pair of ducts D D are inclined downward at a right angle to each other and open by ports D D ninety degrees apart through the conical casings E of cocks E E, arranged transversely across the bottoms of the cylinders A A.
'In each cock-casing E diametrically opposite each of the ports D D, is a pair of separate radial ports F F and F F, of which the ports F F are connected byasegmental duct G with the induction-pipe G and the ports F F by a segmental duct G with the eductionpipe G The plug E of each cock E E is formed with two transverse ports E E at right angles to each other and so adjusted that when the plug E is turned so that the plug-port E will connect the cylinder-port D with the port F, and hence with the induction-pipe G, the other plug-port E will connect the opposite cylinder-port D with the port F and hence with the eduction-pipe G and the ports F and F will be closed; but when the plug E is turned ninety degrees its port E will connect the opposite end cylinder-port D with the induction-port F and its port E connect the cylinder-port D with the cduction-port F, while the ports F and F will be closed. The pistons B B, connected by the rod G,will thus be simultaneously reciprocated in the cylinders A A by the simultaneous operation of the cocks E E. For thus operating the cooks E E their plugs E are provided with like crank-arms H, which are connected adjustably by long links H with a segmental rocker I at points equidistant from the center thereof. The rocker I is mounted to turn loosely on a transverse rock-shaft J, which is itself mounted to turn in bearings J, arranged beneath the piston-rod O midway between the cylinders AA. The rocker I is formed on opposite ends with inward-projecting radial shoulders I, between'which is embraced and which are alternately struck by a striker I which hascorrespondingly-inclinedshoulders and is secured on an arm I of the rock-shaft J. The rock-shaft J is also provided with another arm K, carrying an adjustable weight K, and having an inward projection K provided with opposite radial shoulders K which are arranged in the path of and to be struck alternately by the corresponding shoulders of strikers L, formed on opposite ends of the adjacent one of a pair of swinging lever-plates M, so that as said lever-plate M swings to and fro its strikers L will raise and carry the weighted arm K over its center, when it will fall quickly over upon the opposite striker L. Inclined and adjustable abutments N 6 are arranged to stop the outer end of the arm K at the terminals of its path, and thus take the strain off the strikers L. The lever-plates M swing loosely on the shaft J and are formed with radial slotted guides M at their outer ends, in which travel friction rollers M mounted on a cross-pin M carried by the piston-rod C, so that the lever-plates are swung by the reciprocation of the piston-rod O.
The Weighted arm K in its peculiar motion,
imparted by the lever-plates M and by gravity, as described, likewise rocks the shaft J, and thus the other arm I which by its striker I imparts the same motion to the rocker I, and through the links H to the cyl-- inder-cocks E E, whereby, owing to the quick ending of the motion, a quick cut-off of v the cocks is obtained and the expansion of the steam utilized to its fullest extent.
The segmental rocker I is formed with a medial notch N, adapted for engagement by the latch end 0 of an angle-lever O, the other arm 0 of which is engaged by a pin 0 car-, ried by the elastic diaphragrnic wall of a closed chamber P in communication with the water under pressure, so that the expansionof said wall, due to an excess of water-pressure, will cause the latch end of the angle-le- Ver 0 to engage the notch N in the rocker I: and lock the rocker I, and hence the cocks E E, rock-shaft J, and weighted arm K, midway set fprth. Thelatch-arm of the angle-lever 0 islinked of its stroke and stopping the pump.
to one arm of a fulcrumed lever P,'the other arm of which carries an adjustable weight P in opposition to the pressure on the diaphragmic wall of the water-chamber P, so that the pump can be adjusted to stop when the water-pressure reaches any given point, and when the pressure falls below that point swinging arm K, fast on the shaft J and having striking shoulders K of an arm I also fast on the shaft J and carrying a striker P, a lever I, rocking loosely on the shaft J and having radial striking-shoulders I arranged to be alternately struck by the striker I on the rocking lever I, and operating connections between the rocking lever I and the valves.
2. The combination, with the valves and the yalve-operating rocker or lever I, having a notch N, of a latch O, a pressure-chamber P, having a diaphragmic wall,operating connections between said wall and the latch, and a weight acting on the latch in opposition to thepressure, substantially as hereinbefore In testimony whereof 'I have signed my hame'to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
