Description

J. F. ANGERSTEIN. GAR GOUPLING.
No. 450,348. Patented Apr. 14, 1891.
@www MW wm UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN E. ANGERSTEIN, OE PERDIDO, TEXAS.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 450,348, dated April 14,' 1891.
Application led November 12, 1890. Serial NoJ 371,176. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. ANGERSTEIN,
a citizen of the United States, residing at (Perdido, in the county of Goliad and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Car-Couplings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in that class of automatic car-couplings in which the coupling-pin (worked by a rope or chain) is guided in a vertical tube extending upward from the draw-head, and is supported in position for coupling by a block sliding within the draw-head.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of portions of two cars connected by means of my improved coupling. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section through the middle of a draw-head constructed according to my invention, and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the drawhead.
Reference being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A indicates the drawhead, which is provided with the usual holes I and I for the coupling-pin, and is otherwise of ordinary construction, except in that it is provided with an interior horizontal partition B, extending about half the length of the draw-head from its rear end. This partition separates two helical springs arranged parallel to each other in a vertical plane and acting against a block D, which slides in the front portion of the draw-head. This block is provided on its front face with the horizontal groove or recess E, adapted to receive the end of the coupling-link. An upwardlycurved spring-plate F or guide projects forward and upward from the upper side of this recess, and has an opening F to receive the pin when the drawhead is coupled. Another spring plate or guide G is attached to the lower side of the draw-head A, and is bent upward in front of the mouth of the drawhead for about half the height of the latter, and then rearward into the recess E in the block D. The curved portions of the springplates serve to guide a link entering the coupler into the recess and thus insure the I', while at the same time serving to limit the forward movement of the block under the action of the springs.
The hole l of the draw-head has secured in it the tube L, having an apertured cap at its top, through which passes the rope or chain M. This rope may run tO the top of the car, or, as shown in Fig. l, to and over pulleys, and then down the side of the car.
When the sliding block occupies its normal or forward position, the pin is heid in the tube and rests on the top of the block; but when the block is pushed back against the partition B by the impact of the coupling link it clears the hole I and allows the pin to drop down through the hole F and the link against the plate G at the bottom of the hole I. A pull on the rope will at any time raise it from this position and uncouple the cars.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, in a car-coupler of the character described, of a draw-head provided with holes for the coupling-pin and a partition projecting a portion of the length of the head, a block sliding within the draw-head and adapted to impact on the front end of the said partition, and two helical springs arranged parallel to each other on opposite sides of the partition and adapted to normally press the block forward, with a pin adapted to pass through the holes in the draw-head, substantially as described.
2. The combination, in an automatic carcoupler, of the draw-head provided with holes for the coupling-pin and aA horizontal partition at its rear end, the block sliding in the forward end of the draw-headand provided with a recess in its front face, two helical springs arranged on opposite sides of the partition and adapted to press on the sliding block, a spring guide-plate at the mouth of the draw-head having a curved lip entering ating-rope passing through the mouth of the the recess in the block and adapted t0 limit tube, substantially als described. the forward movement of the block, another' curved spring-plate secured to the block and JOHN F' ANGERSTEIN 5 adapted to receive the coupling-pin, and a Witnesses:
tube projecting upwardly from a hole in the A. E. LUZENBERG,
draw-head, with a coupling-pin and its oper-d B. BEHRENS.
