IMPROVEMENT IN FASTENING BAGS, SACKS, 81,6.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 14,907, dated November 1,1864 antedated June 26, 1864.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABNER BROWNELL Noon, Jr., of Ovid, in the county of Clinton and State of l\"[ichigan, have invented a new and useful machine for fastening the mouths of grain and other bags when in use; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and lo the letters of reference marked thereon.
Letter A is an iron ring made of about oneeighth-inch wire and large enough to slip over the mouth of the bag when gathered up.
Letter 13 (main part) is a plug or stopper of hard wood, and turned with a knob on the upper end to grasp with the hand when handling the bag. Below the neck it is turned with an increased diameter, so that at the bottom it will not quite pass through the abovedescribed iron ring. About five-eighths of an inch above the bottom it is pierced horizontally by a tapering mortise. Thereis also a small hole running from the center of the upper surface of said mortise and terminating at the center of the top of knob.
Letter 0 is a tapering key, made of hard wood and fitting the mortise in the plug or stopper.
Letter D is a screw, made of nearly onefourth-inch iron wire, and cut with a coarse thread, so as to hold well in wood. This screw enters the hole at the top of stopper, and screws down onto the top of tapering key to hold it in place. About three-fourths of an inch of the upper end of said screw is bent at a right angle to the length of the screw, forming a purchase to turn the screw up or down.
Letter E represents the bag-fastener attached to a bag as in use.
Mode of application. When the bag is filled, or partially filled, as the case may be, the stopper is to be set inside of the mouth of the bag on top of the grain, with the large end down and in the center of the bag 5 then the mouth ofbag is to be gathered up and the ringslipped over it; then, grasping the mouth of the bag with one hand, with the other slide the ring down until the knob is felt to pass through it; then put the hand inside of the mouth of the bag, take hold of the knob, and draw the stopper up, at the same time putting in the key and pushing it tightly to place; then turn down on the screw, so that it will press on top of the key and hold it in place.
To unfasten the bag, turn back the screw, place the palm of the hand on the small end of the key, press it out, then press down on the stopperand draw the ring off.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The iron ring A, plug B, tapering, key 0, and screw D, combined and arranged substantially as described.
