ABATTOIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 447,810, dated March 10, 1891. Application filed November 4, 1890. fierial No. 370,273. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: pended from the ceiling by rods N or other- Be 1t known that I, JONAH \V. MOYER, of wise, and may be formed of wood or metal,
the city and county of Philadelphia, and State but preferably of wood. I 55 of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improve- Arranged above the rear ends of the several 5 ment in Abattoirs, of which the following is runs G is a series of tracks II, which lead to a a specification. transverse track Lwith which they may be con- My invention has reference to abattoirs; nectetl by switches i, and this track Iconnects and it consists of certain improvements, all of by a short section of track J, passing through 60 which are fully set forth in the following a doorway into the chill-room K, with a series IO specification, and shown in the accompanying of parallel tracks L by means of switches I. The hog is conveyed to the runs, and while supported by said runs it is halved, and the The object of my invention is to provide a construction of tracks for an abattoir, which two halves are secured upon independent trol- 5 leys P and are run over the adjacent tracks shall facilitate the proper handling of hogs or other animals, with particular reference to H on the track I, and thence into the chillthat portion of the slaughter-house where the room to the tracks L. XVhen the trolley is moved to the companying drawings, in whichend of the track F, the gambrel-stick will be Figure 1 is a plan view of a portion of an over the grooves g of the runs G, as shown in abattoir, showing my improvements applied Fig. 2, and when the trolley drops into the thereto. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation-of a notch h of the track F the gambrel-stick is portion of the same, taken on line y y of Fig. brought to rest upon the runs G, and the hook V 2 5 3; and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional elep of the trolley falls from its connection with vation of same, taken on line a: a: of Fig. 2. the gambrel-stick, as indicated in Fig. 3. As soon as the hog is halved, and while in Fig. 3. After the hog is scraped a gamstill supported by the gainbrel-stick, hooks brel-stick O is placed through the joints of Q of another set of trolleysPon the tracks II the rear legs, as shown in Fig. 2, and this are hooked into the joints of the hind legs, as 5 gambrel'stick is hung upon a hooked portion shown in Fig. The halves of the hog, with p of a trolleyP. The hog is then run around the gambrel-st-ick, are then pushed in the diupon the railway G, which is suspended from rection of the arrow, Fig. 3, until the gamthe ceiling, and the weight of the hog is taken brel-stick leaves the runs G. The halves of 9: on the scales D. After being weighed the the hog will then be upon the two trolleys 40 whole hog is moved farther along the track and upon separate tracks. The gambrel- C onto a trackE, from which it may be shifted stick may now be removed and each of the onto any one of a series of short tracks F by halves of the hog run over the tracks indemeans of switches a. pendently. Arranged between the several tracks F and The run G is made extremely short, as its 45 at a lower level are a series of short wooden only function is to hold the hog during the runs G, which are preferably made of wood halving thereof and during its transfer from and are provided with lateral grooved guide the single track F to the double tracks H H. portions g, into which the enlarged heads of By the use of this apparatus it is evident the gambrel-stick O are received, as shown in that at no time is it required to lift the weight 50 Fig. 2. These runs Ghave their curved guides of the hog from the time it is placed upon the g inclined downward at each end, as indicated track 0 to the time it is received in the chillby the letter R in Fig. 3. The runs are susroom K, for during the release of one trolley Liv and the attachment of the other two trolleys the weight of the hog is sustained by the gambrel-stick and the runs G.
I do not limit myself to the minor details of construction herein set out, as they may be modified in various ways without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, Patent, is-
1. The combination of a track, two runs arranged upon either side of said track, two tracks arranged substantially in line with the two runs, separate trolleys for each of the tracks, and a gambrel-stick adapted to be supported by the trolley of the first-mentioned track, whereby a hog may be supported upon the gambretstiek and conveyed to the runs and after being halved the halves be sustained by the separate trolleys on the remaining tracks and conveyed to a distant place.
2. The combination of a track, two runs arranged upon either side of said track and having grooved guides which are inclined downward at each end, two tracks arranged substantially in line with the two runs, sepa rate trolleys for each of the tracks, and a gambrel-stick adapted to be supported by the trolley of the first-mentioned track, whereby a hog may be supported upon the gambrelstick and conveyed to the runs and after being halved the halves be sustained by the separate trolleys on the remaining tracks and conveyed to a distant place.
The combination of a track having a notch in its upper portion, two runs arranged upon either side of said track and arranged below the notch of said track, two tracks arranged substantially in line with the two runs, separate trolleys for each of the tracks, and .a gambrel-stick adapted to be supported by the trolley of the first-mention ed track, whereby a hog may be supported upon the gambrel-stiek and conveyed to the runs and after being halved the halves be sustained by the separate trolleys on the remaining tracks and conveyed to a distant place.
The combination of a track E, a series of short tracks F, arranged at an angle thereand desire to secure by Letters to, a series of switches e, forming a connec tion between either of said tracks F and the track E, a series of runs G, arranged between the tracks F, a series of tracks H, substantially in line with the runs G, and separate trolleys for the tracks I-I, whereby a trolley with a whole hog may be conveyed over the tracks E and F to the runs G, upon which the said hog is sustained during halving and from which the halves may be removed by separate trolleys upon the tracks H H.
5. The combination of a track E, a series of short tracks F, arranged at an angle thereto, a series of switches e, forming a connection between either of said tracks F and the track E, a series of runs G, arranged between the tracks F, a series of tracks H, arranged substantiallyin line with the runs G,a track I, communicating with all of the tracks H by means of switches 'i', a chill-room provided with tracks, a track connecting the tracks of said chill-room with the track I, and separate trolleys for the tracks H, whereby the trolley with a whole hog may be conveyed over the tracks E and F to the'runs G, upon which the said hog is sustained during halving and from which the halves may be removed by separate trolleys upon the tracks H II and conveyed over the tracks II and I into the chill-room.
6. The combination of a railway leading from the slaughtering and scalding portion of the abattoir, two short runs arranged at a point of said railway distant from said slaughtering and scalding portion of the abattoir, a gambrel-stick adapted to support the hog and rest upon the runs during halving, a trolley adapted to the railway and supporting the gambrebstick, and a railway extending beyond the runs, whereby the halved hog may be conveyed to a distant place with but little friction.
In testimony of which invention I have hereunto set my hand.
