SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 446,L73, dated February 17, 1891. Application filed May 5, 1888. Serial No. 272,904. (No model.)

Be it known that I, GEORGE Souunen'r, a citizen of the 'lfnited States, residing at Walnut Springs, in the county of Bosque and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grain Conveyors for Binders and Operating Mechanism Connected 'lherewith; an dI do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to grain-conveyors used in connection with grain binders and harvesters; and it consists of an improved construction for conveyers and the details of the same, and operating mechanism, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan view showing a graiirconveyer with my improvements applied to a harvester-platform. Fig.2 is a side view, partly in section, of the conveyer and connecting parts. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the conveyer-head closed. Fig. 4 shows a plan of the underside of the conveyer-head.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the platform, which is formed of upper and lower plates of sheet-iron, which are braced by intervening strips, to which the plates are secured, two of said strips forming walls of the passage of the conveyor. Openings are made in the upper surface of the platform for the purposes of the conveyer and the devices carried by it.
B indicates a block, forming with its attachments the head of the conveyer, which is moved by an endless chain a, which passes over sprocket-wheels c c, the said head moving in a passage between two walls m m and extending upwardly through a slot b in the upper plate of the platform. The notches or openings (Z are formed in the upper plate of the platform on opposite sides of slot 1) at the point from which the conveyor-head moves near the outer edge of the platform, the metal being bent down, as seen at c, at the inner side of the notches to form guides, for the purpose hereinafter stated. The notches or openings (Z' are formed in the upper plate near the inner edge of the platform, the metal being bent up at the outer side of the notches, as
seen at c, to form guides at a point near the forward end of the passage of the conveyor.
The block B is provided with two pivoted armsf, the pivoted ends of said arms being provided with toothed segments 0 for engagement with each other, so that when one of said arms is turned laterally outward the other arm is turned laterally in the opposite direction, as shown in the drawings. To the outer ends of armsfare hinged the extensions g, so that the latter may rise, and to the outer ends of these extensions are loosely connected the rods 71, at a suitable distance from the hinge-connection of partsfa-nd g. The said rods 72 are also connected at their other ends with the block B at i i, being a suitable distanceforward from the pivots of arms f.
0 indicates a central lever, which is pivoted in bearings t" on the block B, the lower part of said lever being curved and extending through a slot at in the block and carrying on its end a cross-piece m, on the ends of which are placed rollers 7L. The upper part of lever O is straight, and its upper end is pivoted to an extension it between the ends of the latter, said extension 71 having a curved point,. the rear end of said extension being loosely connected by alink a with block B near its rear end. Anti-friction rollers 1?? extend laterally from the sides of block l3 within said passage and move against the upper metal plate below the metal each side of the slot 1) and serve to keep the block in position.
On the pivot of one of the arms f and under the block B is loosely placed a roller 12", which serves, to prevent the block B from rubbing against the adjacent wall m An arm "a is fastened to the lower end of said pivot and extends to the opposite side of the passage, said arm having an anti friction roller 0 at its outer end. As seen in Fig. 4, the arm 92; extends into a recess m" of the opposite side wall m of the passage.
C indicates an elbow-lever, which is pivoted in the platform A in position to be engaged by the conveyor-head as it moves forward, said lever being connected by a rod 0 with the hinged butter-board D, as shown in Fig. 1. C is another pivoted lever having an arm 0 said lever being also in position to engage with the conveyer-head in its movement. 'lhe lever 0 is extended beyond its pivot and linked to the lower end of an upright pivoted lever C", the bent upper end of which is connected with the lower end of a lever C, which is fast on a shaft 17. The said 5 shaft carries an arm 19*, which is connected by a rod s with an arm 4*, pivoted at its lower end to some support. Through this arm r passes a shaft 3 which also passes through a sleeve .9, pivoted at s in a bracket .9 The to inner end of the shaft s carries a gear 5, which always meshes with a gear 0 on a transverse shaft 0, carrying pulleys 0, over which run the chains a. The outer end of said shaft 3 carries a bevel-gear s, which may be thrown into engagement with either of the bevel-gears s or s by movement of the arm or bearing 2' carrying the sleeve 8, through which passes the shaft The arm 4', as above stated, is connected by the rod 5 with the outer end of the arm 11 whose inner end is fast on the shaft 19. Said shaft is automatically turned in one direction by the striking of the head-block B against the lever G which turns the upright lever C and that in turn turns the lever G which is fast on the shaft 1). The latter is turned in the opposite direction, as well, by the draw-rod M. The levers O and C and the mechanism with which the outer ends of said levers are 0 connected are the same as those shown and described in my application for a patent for a grain-binder, Serial No. $2,905, filed May 5, 1888.
The stops 1) are pivoted in the platform in vertical position, in which they are sustained by springs 1', one stop being located on each side of the slot 1) near its inner end. The object of these stops is to prevent the passage of any straggling grain which falls on the con- 0 veyer-chain behind the conveyer and might be carried along by the chain. The stops yield to the pressure of the loaded conveyer as it passes forward; but after it has passed they are raised by their springs and retain the straggling grain for the next operation of the conveyer. A rod 0" is connected at one end with the lever O and extends along the conveyer-passage, and has its end Q' bent and in position to catch against the blockB on the return movement of the conveyer, thus drawing lever C as hereinafter stated.
E indicates a fixed angular piece or expander with its point in position at the outer end of the slot 6. The sides of this expander diverge from its point, and its upper corner or angle also rises from said point toward its base, whereby as the conveyer-head moves to the outer end of its passage, its arms f extending forwardly, said arms and also central lever C having been closed, the arms f impinge against the opposite sides of the expander E and are thus somewhat expanded for the next forward movementof the conveyer, and the forward end of lever O raised by said expander so that it assumes the position shown in Fig. 2. The conveyor is started in its forward movement by the driver drawing-rod M, by which the shaft 5 of wheel 3 is moved, and wheel .5 is turned into engagement with pinion s on the powershaft and through intervening mechanism imparts motion to the shaft of the sprocketwheel 0, the conveyer being thus drawn forward, all as described above. As the conveyer-head starts on its forward or inward movement, the arm 0);, extending into recess in" at one side and near the outer end of the passage, remains therein until the conveyer has passed, drawing the arm with it, the movement of the arm causing the engaging arms f to turn outward in opposite directions, as seen in Fig. 1, and the hinged extensions g are raised by the rods 71, by which the extensions are connected with the block B. At the same time the central lever O is raised by the cross-piece m coming in contact with guides e, which causes the cross-piece to rise, and thus bring the straight part of lever C to a vertical position. A curved link 2' allows the cross-piece m to rise without raising the chain. This link is rigidly attached at one end to the block 13 and linked at its other end to the chain, between which ends it curves upwardly, whereby said movement of the cross-piece m is permitted, as shown in Fig. 2. The extension 11, carried by O, is raised by the connecting-rod a. The conveyer-head, with its arms extended, moves forward, conveying the grain to the compressing devices, and as it moves along actuates lever C, by which the compressing devices are started. \Vhen near the end of its for ward movement it strikes thelever C thereby throwing gear .9 into engagement with the other bevel-gear on the driving-shaft, and thus reversing the movement of the sprocketwheel shaft and the movement of the conveyer-chain. As the conveyer commences its return movement the arm n enters the recess m at one side and near the inner. end of the passage, and as this arm is keyed to the pivot of one of the arms f and moves in unison therewith its turning causes the arms f to turn backward, thus folding down the extensions g and connecting-rods h. The crosspiece carried by lever C falls through the open-ling d, causing lever G and connections to fold down, as shown in Fig. 3, and the conveyerhead is moved back to its starting-point with its parts folded so that it can pass underneath the grain on the platform. As the conveyer-head approaches the end of its return movement the block 13 strikes the bent end 0' of rod 0", connected with lever C thus drawing lever 0 which is connected with lever G which is connected with lever C. The lever 0 being fast on a shaft 1), turns said shaft, and through arm 19*, which is connected by a rod 5- with the movable bearing 0' of the shaft 5 of wheels and pinion 5, draws the movable bearing, and the pinion s is thrown out of engagement with the pinion s whereupon the movement of the conveyer ceases, all as more fully described above.
A slotb, similar to b, is made in the plat-' form, with similar appurtenances and levers c 0 and the conveyerhead may be transferred to and arranged in said slot for operation when long grain is to be bound. For such purpose an extension II is usually provided for the platform, and levers and c" ma be connected wit-h O and C res ectivel .with the platform A, having a slot 17 and parallel walls m m 011 the sides thereof, one of said walls being provided with a recess m, of the conveyer-block 13, moving between said walls, an arm f, mounted on a vertical pivot in said block, and an arm a rigidly connected to the pivot of said arm f and having a friction-roller 0 at its free end, adapted to engage said recess, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a grain-conveyer, the combination, with the platform A, having a slot b and parallel walls m m on the sides thereof, one of said walls being provided with a recess m of the conveyer-block B, moving between said walls, arms f, mounted on vertical pivots in said block, intermeshing toothed segments 0 at the inner ends of said arms, and an arm n rigidly connected to the pivot of one of said arms and having a friction-roller 0 at its free end, adapted to engage said recess, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a grain-conveyer, the combination, with the platform A, having a slot l), with parallel side walls m m, and the conveyer block 13, moving between said walls, of the arms f, mounted 011 vertical pivots in said block, intermeshing segments 0 at the inner ends of said arms, means, substantially as described, for throwing said arms outwardly at the proper time, extensions g, hinged to the outer ends of said arms, and rods h, linked at their ends to said extensions and to the block 15, all as and for the purpose set forth.
l. In a grain-convcyer, the combination, with the slotted platform A, the conveyerblock B, moving in the slot therein, the arms f, mounted on vertical pivots in said block,
and means for operating said blocks, of the wedge -shaped piece E, mounted upon the platform A at the end of the slot therein and adapted to separate the outer ends of said arms f, as and for the purpose set forth.
5. In a grain-conveyor, the combination, with the platform A, a slot 7) therein, provided with side tracks having openings (6 (1 through the platform at the opposite ends of said tracks, and the conveyer-block B, moving on said tracks, of the lever l, pivoted in said block and having a curved lower portion, a cross-piece m at the end of said curved portion, and frietion-rollers h on the extremiand adapted to pass through said openings, tics of said cross-piece, moving on said tracks as and for the purpose set forth.
6. In a grain-conveyer, the combination, with the platform A, a slot Z) therein, provided with side tracks having openings d d through the platform at the opposite ends of said tracks, and the conveyer-block B, moving on said tracks and having a slotm in its body, of the lever C, pivoted in said slot an and having a curved lower portion, the cross-piece m at the end of said curved portion, its ends moving on said tracks and adapted to pass through said openings, an extension a, pivoted between its ends to the end of said lever G, and a rod n, pivotally connecting the end of said extension with the conveyer-block, all as and for the purpose set forth.
7 In a grain-conveyer, the combination, with the platform A, having the slot 1), with overhanging side walls, the latter having notches cl near the ends of the slot, of the endless chain a, moving in said slot and having an upwardly-curved link projecting through it, the conveyer-block B in the chain adjacent said link, the lever O, pivoted in said block, and the cross-piece m at one end of said lever, passing through said notches and standing within said link when raised, substantially as described.
8. In a grain-conveyer, the combination of the platform A, having a slot 12, parallel walls m m at the sides thereof, one of said walls being provided with a recess m and tracks on the inner faces of said wall, with the conveyer-block B, having friction-rollers n moving upon said tracks, the arms f, mounted on vertical pivots in said block and having intermeshin g toothed segments 0 at their inner ends, extensions g, hinged to the outer ends of said arms and linked to the block, means, substantially as described, for throwing said arms outward, with the lever G pivoted in said block, an extension at, pivoted to said lever and adapted to be thrown upward thereby, and means, substantially as described, for operating said lever, all as and for the purpose set forth.
9.
