UNITED A STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST I-IJALMAR EDGREN, on LINCOLN, NEBRASKA.-
ADJUSTAB LE BOOK-STAN D.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 446,331, dated February 10, 1891.
Application filed August 1890- Serial No. 362,932. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, AUGUST HJALMAR ED- GREN, a subject of the King of Sweden, and a resident of Lincoln, in the county of Lancaster and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Book-Stands; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a side view showing thehinged shelves extended. Fig. 2 is a side view showing the book-racks, showing the hinged shelves partially drawn up; and Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of thehinged end shelves and its extensions.
This invention relates to certain improvements in book-stands; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter disclosed.
In the drawings, A is a central upright or standard suitably stepped or secured in feeta, preferably mounted upon casters, all as usual. Mounted upon the standard or upright A so as to revolve thereon is a bookcase B, its bottom or base resting upon the feet a at their upper converging ends.
G O are book racks or supports, the upper two being hinged at their upper ends to the upper ends of the opposite sides of the frame I), and the lower two being similarly hinged to said frame I) just below where the lower ends of said upper racks rest against the frame, said frame being mounted so as to revolve upon the standard or upright A. The racks or supports are adapted to be adjusted and held in an inclined position, suitable for holding the book or books placed therein at the desired inclination by means of props c, pivoted to said racks or supports and engaging notches in the edges of the frames 1) b. The upper racks or supports 0 are preferably provided with extensible or sliding leaves 0 suitably held in position for greater convenience in holding the book. The frame I) is also provided at its ends with hinged book racks or supports (1, having hinged to their side edges wings or extensions d, adaptedto close against the sides thereof. The wings or extensions are engaged by bolts 6, sliding in keepers e, projecting from the racks or supports d to hold the wings or extensions extended when desired. These end racks or supports are also held adjustably in an inclined position by props d hinged to the frame Z) and engaging said racks.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
The book-rack comprising the central upright or standard, the lower book-case B and the upper frame b, revoluble on said standard, the racks C, hinged to opposite sides of the upper end of said upperframe, the'racks O, hinged to opposite sides of its intermediate portion, the racks d, hinged to the ends thereof, the vertically-sliding extensions 0 connected to the racks O, the side wings or extensions hinged to the sides of the rack d and adapted to close against the sides thereof and engaged by supporting-bolts projecting therefrom, and the props o and d? for supporting, respectively, the racks C C and d, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
AUGUST HJALMAR Witnesses:
