SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 445,410, dated January 2'7, 1891.
Application filed April 28, 1890.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS NESOM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
My said invention relates to certain improvemen ts in steam-boilers of that character shown and described in Letters Patent No. 347,502, granted to me August 17, 1886, by which the construction is rendered more efficient and convenient for use, and is adapted for use in stoves or furnaces of a rectangular form, all as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof, and on which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts, Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section through a stove provided with a boiler embodying my present invention; Fig. 2, a horizontal section, looking downwardly from the dotted line 2 2, showing one section only of the boiler in top plan; Fig. 3, a horizontal section through a single sectio nlooking downwardly from the dotted line 3 and Fig. 4-,a transverse vertical section on the dotted line t i in Fig. 2.
In said drawings the portions marked A represent a stove or casing within which the boiler is mounted; B, said boiler, and O the feed-pipe.
As shown, the casing A is a vertical stove of rectangular form; but, as will be readily understood, it may be any furnace or the box, being formed with a grate a, and other features of construction necessary to complete it. for the purpose for which it is designed.
The boiler B is made up of sections, each of which consists of a longitudinal tube provided with a central circular aperture in both its top and under side, a flange being formed around each top opening adapted to fit within the edge of the flange around the wall of the adjacent section. Each of these tubes is provided with a series of hollow arms 1), extending outhorizontally at right angles therewith from each side thereof, as shown. These arms are preferably formed with wide bellshaped outer ends and narrow inner ends with Serial No. 349,942. (No model.)
a hollow flange formed on the top and under side of each, which forms a narrow passage from each of said arms into the tube with which itis connected. By means of this particular formation a large heating-surface is exposed to the action of the fire, and the hollow flange on the lower side of each arm serves to aiii'ord a perfect drainage therefor when it is desired to drain the boiler, and the hollow flange on the top side serves to provide a direct escape for the steam which is generated in the end of the arm which passes through said flange into the tube 13 and along into the central tube formed by the several sections connected together, from whence it passes into a steam dome Bon the top of the stove. Said steam-dome is of a common formation, provided with a neck adapted to be inserted through an aperture in the top of the stove and be joined to the top section of the boiler. It is provided with an exterior annular flange 7) around its neck, which flange is adapted to rest upon the top of the stove and support it thereon. The several sections are secured together and to the steam dome by means of a central rod B which en gages at its lower end with a seat formed in the cap b which fits over the opening on the under side of the lower section, which rod passes up through the several sections and the steanrdome, and has a nut b thereon, by means of which the several parts are tightly drawn together. The several joints between the parts are madetight by means of a ringot' asbestus orany packing substance interposed between them. 5y this means it will be seen that the boiler is supported from the top, no support being necessary within the stove, which enables the boiler to be readily and conveniently applied to any stove. It willbe understood, of course, that while I have shown three sections composing the boiler, yet one section or any number desired might be used instead. For instance, in cooking-stoves a boiler composed of a single section could be used to advantage for many purposes, and could be readily applied thereto, as by means of the flange I) and a ring of the required size to fill the ordinary aperture in the top of the stove. No other fitting or changes in the stove are necessary. The end of each tube and each arm is prefm'ably provided with a plug, as-showu, which may be removed, when desired, for cleaning or other purposes. The arms I) of alternate sections are also prefer ably arranged between those of the adjacent sections, thus providing a serpentine path for the current of heat around the arms and securing the consequent advantage of bl'll'lging said heat in direct contact with a greater amount of surface and retarding its passage through the stove.
The feed-pipe 0 needs no description, it being preferably connected to the lower portion of the boiler, but may be connected to any section or to the end of any arm whichis pro vided with a plug.
The steam-dome is shown as provided with a steam-pipe and pipe for the steam-gage, as is usual.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters .Patent, is
1. A steam-boiler com posed of a steamdoine and one or more sections secured together and supported therefrom, each of which sect-ions has a central portion with a vertical opening or passage leading to said dome, and a horizontal tube extending outin opposite directions from said central portion, said horizontal tubes being provided with hollow arms projecting out from opposite sides thereof, substantially as set forth.
2. A steam-boiler composed of a dome and one or more sections secured thereto, said sections consisting of a hollow casting communicating with said dome, and a series of arms projecting out therefrom, the bottom of each of said armsbeing inclined downwardly from its outer end inwardly,substantially as described, and for the purposes specified.
3. The combination, in a steam-boiler, of the dome and the several sections secured together, as described, of the arms I), extending out from said sections and providedwith hollow flanges on their top and under sides, substantially as described, and for the purposes specified.
4. In a steam-boiler, the combination, with the main portions thereof, of arms extending outtherefrom, the outer ends of which are bell-shaped, and the top and under sides of which are provided with channels from the outer to the inner ends, the lower one of which inclines downwardly and the upper one of which inclines upwardly, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination, in a steam-boiler, of the casing provided with an opening in its top, the dome mounted in said opening and supported in position by means of an external flange or collar which rests on the stove or casing, and the sections of boiler connected therewith and supported therefrom by a rod extending through said dome and said several sections of the boiler, substantially as set forth.
