ITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
HARRY IRWIN JEFFERS, OF LEXINGTON, MISSISSIPPI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- I'IALE TO SAMUEL D. GIVIN, OF SAME PLACE.
RAILROAD-TIE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 445,274, dated January 27, 1891.
Application tiled July 16. 1890. Serial No. 358,929. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
`Be it known that I, HARRY IRWIN JEEEERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lexington, in the county of Holmes and State of Mississippi, have invented new and useful Improvements in Railway-Ties, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relatcs'to an improvement in railway-ties; and it consists in the construetion and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, and pointed out definitely in the claim.
The object of my invention is to provide a tie with respect to which the rails may be readily attached and detached and which may be utilized without the application of spikes. I attain this object by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, Wherein like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views, and in Which- Figure l is a perspective View of my tie, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the center.
In the drawings. A represents the tie, preferably formed of metal, having a rectangular opening in its center, as at B.
The upper face of the ends of the tieis cut away or reduced, as at O, the inner portion being cut diagonally inward, forming tongue D, having its upper edge projecting over the reduced portion. In the end portions are formed longitudinal recesses or channels E. extending through the reduced portion and the central part into the central opening B. The outer part of the recess has an open top, thereby forming a shoulder e. Slidingly arranged in the recesses E are clamping-bars or securers I, formed to snugly fit in the recesses, and having reduced inner ends f, which pass through to the opening B. These ends have vertical slots therein, through which is adapted to pass a suitable wedge G for locking the bars in place. The outer ends of the bars F have a gripping-tongue II thereon, with an inclined edge to form a gripping-surface corresponding to the one on the tie, which is oppositely inclined.
In operation the rails are placed in position, the inner flanges projecting under the tongues D. The bar F is then drawn in by forcing down the wedge and the tongue H forced over the opposite iiange of the rail. The rails are thereby securely held in place, and by withdrawing the wed ge they may be readily released.
I am aware that many minor changes in the construction and arrangement of the part-s of Iny device can be made without in the least departing from the nature and principle of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A railway-tie consisting of a metal bar formed with a rectangular opening in its center and fiat cut-away outer upper faces, the inner end walls of the cut-away portions being inclined inwardly to form grippingtongues extending entirely across the tie, and having longitudinal channels in the cut-away portions terminating at their inner ends in slots beneath the tongues and leading into the central openings, the sliding clampingbars in the channels, their ends extending through the slots and formed with vertical apertures, the outer ends of the bars formed with enlarged gripping-tongues, and Wedges passing through the apertures in the bars and impinging against the end walls of the central opening, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HARRY IRWIN JEFFERS.
