ALLOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,943, dated December 30, 1890. Application filed June 21, 1890. Serial No. 356,275. (Specimens.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, IRA H. J OHANNES, acitizen of the United States, residing at VVashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Alloys; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in alloys designed more particularly for man ufacturing printers type; and it consists in the combination of certain metals hereinafter described, and definitely pointed out in the claims.
The object of my invention is to produce an alloy with which to make type of the ordinary design, rendering them lighter, more convenient for handling, and more durable than those now in use, and also greatly adding to their longevity, desirability, and cheapness.
In the use of the present common form of type the inconvenience in handling and we pense in transportation, owing to its great weight, also its susceptibility to injury, are great objections. To overcome these objections is therefore the aim and purpose of my invention.
In the main my invention consists in the use of an alloy of aluminum and type-metal of the common or ordinary form, which consists of lead and antimony; but I have found that other type -metals may be employed which are composed of a larger number of metals, such as lead, antimony, and tin.
In the preparation of the alloy and the type therefrom I first take fifty parts of aluminum, by weight, melt the same, and while in its molten stateintroduce fifty parts of cold typemetal. I then thoroughly commingle the metals, and to form the type introduce the same into suitable molds, where it is finally permitted to cool. The type thus formed is of a bright, strong, durable, and very light nature, easily handled and readily cleaned, and also non-corrodible.
-I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact proportions of metal, as an amount equal to or exceeding fifteen parts may be used, together with an amount of type-metal equal to or less than eighty-five parts, it being understood that the greater the amount of aluminum the lighter the type or alloy; nor the particular method of forming the type above described, as it is evident that many changes can be made without departing from the nature and principle of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An alloy consisting of aluminum in amount equal to or exceeding fifteen parts, by weight, and a combined amount of antimony and lead equal to orless than eighty-five parts, substantially as described.
2. An alloy consisting of aluminum in an amount equal to or exceeding fifteen parts, by Weight, and a combined amount of tin, antimony, and lead equal to or less than eightyfive parts, substantially as described.
