SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,919, dated December 30, 1890.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, JACOB W. KRAUs, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Sterling, in the county of Wayne and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cultivators, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. v
This invention pertains to certain new and useful improvements in cnltivators, having for its object the provision of simple and highly-eiicient means for readily operating the drag-frames simultaneously or separately and for raising and lowering the same from the ground and to swing them apart or together laterally or parallel. By thus constructing my improved cultivator one man is enabled to operate a machine with ease, and

it may be operated while the driver is walking behind it or riding on the machine.
The invention therefore comprises the construction, combination, and arrangement of the parts substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of my improved cultivator. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of my invention. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of one side thereof. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section of the tooth-frame. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the axle and the means for securing it to the T-shaped portions. Fig. 6 is a sectional view of the spring cultivator-tooth, and Fig. 7 is a detail sectional view of the spring ratchetlever.. Fig. 8 is a plan view of the cultivat-or, and Fig. 9 is a front elevation of the same.
In the embodiment of my invention, A represents the cultivator-frame, composed of the parallel side bars ct c1, and the front cross-bar a. J ournaled to the under side of barsa a, near the rear end thereof, is the axle B of an approximately inverted-U shape and having its short arms b b projected into vertical hollow cylinders o b', integral with inverted-T- shaped portions C C, in which they are pivotally secured by means of inclined rods b2 lf3, connected at one end to the bars a ct and projected through horizontally-aligned slots b3 b3 in cylinders b b' and through orifices b4 b4 in said short arms b Z1. Upon the outer horizontal ends of the T-shaped portions O O the carrying-wheels are pivotally secured.
The inner horizontal ends of the T-shaped portions O O are grooved at c c, in which grooves the driver or operator places his feet. yCast integral with the inner horizontal arms of the T-shaped portions are plates c c', hav-y ing a series of orifices therein, the purpose of which will be described farther on. To the upper ends of the vertical cylinders t b of the T`shaped portions C O, and cast integral therewith and at right angles thereto, are horizontal arms or levers c2 c2, the ends of which are connected by a link or rod c3, the object of which is,in connection with said levers or arms c2 c2, to cause the wheels when moved laterally to move parallel. Thus constructed it will be seen that the axle proper is formed in three castings, viz: the axle B and the T-shaped portions O O. Said T- shaped portions connect the inner and outer horizontal arms, the plates having the series of orifices therein, the vertical cylinders, and the right angular levers.
D D are the drag-frames, composed of twov bars d and d', converged inward and connected near their center at cl2 and iiared at both ends, the rear ends running parallel with one another, and are braced by a cross-strip d3. The spring cnltivator-teeth E are connected to said parallel bars and secured rigidly between the lower ends of two inclined parallel strips e e, pivoted at e c to one of the bars cl d of the drag-bars. Converging toward strips e e and connected at e2 e2 rigidly to the end of one of the bars d d is a corresponding strip e3, between the lower ends of which is pivoted near its center a strip c4, pivoted between the parallel strips e e at e5, and having a curved arm e6, formed on its upper end, which engages a notch e7 in one of the bars d d. Connected to the strip e* at es is a rod c, which engages a spring ew. Secured to the under side of one of the bars (Z CZ is a socket en, projected downwardly therefrom. Thus constructed it will be seen that when the tooth Vor shovel strikes a rock or other similar irnpediment in its course the spring is contracted, the tooth swung backward and conse-y quently elevated, thus allowing it to pass over the obstruction.

Adjustably connected to a vertical bar j' and to the cross or bracing strip di" is an ordinary plow-handle f', which may be readily connected in case the operator is walking hehind the machine, or it may be used when he is riding thereon.
Bars (l d', composing the drag-frame l) l), as has hereinbefore been mentioned, are flared at their forward ends and are connected by a rod g, having' a sleeve g thereon, the rod g being projected at its inner end through the lower end of a supporting rod or bar g2, rigidly connected to the under side ofthe crossbar a of the lframe A, and through the lower end of a strip g, pivoted at g4 to the front ends of bar a. Projected vertically and inclined inwardly from sleeve g at its outer end is a lever g5, having connected to its center by one end a link or rod 71, which extends backward horizontally and is connected by its hooked end to the plates o c of the T- shaped portions of the axle-beams C C. To the upper end of the lever g5 is connected one end of a rod or link 71,', extending rearwardly in a horizontal position an d connecting with the lower end of the lever II on one end of the cross rod h2, journaled upon the under side ot' bars c c and extending from side to side of the frameA parallel with the main axlebeam l-l. The cross-rod h2 is projected at its opposite end into a right-angled arm h, arranged in alignment with the lower end of the lever 1I and having connected to it a link 7L. The lever ll extends upward above its pivotal point and is designed to engage a semicircular ratchet-bar 7L", its extreme upper end terminating in a handle 71,5. Thus it will be seen that by throwing the lever 1I forward the d rag-bars l) l) will be thrown apart, and by throwing it backward the distance between the rear ends of the bars will bc lessened, or by pressing upon the inner horizontal ends of the supplemental axle-beams the bars will be thrown from side to side parallel to each other.
Connected to the rear ends of frame-bars a a is a seinicircular ratchet-bar designed to be engaged by a pawl on lever I, pivoted at its lower end to a rod t', projected from the inner sides of bars o, a and incloscd by an approximately-V-shaped casing Z, also pivoted upon rod i', said casing having in its sides a series of orifices, and having a rod m run ning across its upper open end, against which the upper end of an approximately-V-shaped springmbea1's,said springbeing coiled around a sleeve mx, between the sides ot the casing l, and on the rod 1f', and its other end bears against the outer side of the lever I and against the front face of a lug l thereon.
The purpose of the lever I is to raise and adjust the drag-frame.
Projecting forwardly froni the casings Z are arms m, jointed to the upper ends of bars m2, reaching down through and having lateral portions `m3 at their lower ends adapted to engage keepers 'nz/1, provided on the bars d, whereby is effected the vertical adjustment of the drag-trames. The bars m2 are each provided with a notch n, to permit, by elevating either one or the other of the drag-frames, the engagement of the lower edge of the respective keeper with said notch for the retention in an elevated position whichever one of said drag-frames whose tooth it is or may be desired to take out ot operation.
Pivoted on the rods gi g?, connected to the under side ot' cross-bar a, are levers o o, connected at their ends by a rod orlink o. These levers have connected integral therewith and projected vertically downward at right angles thereto a concave strip o2, which conforms to the periphery of rod g2, on which it turns, and proj ccted from the lower end of said concave strips oL o2 at right angles thereto are draftlevers oS o3, when in their normal position being in alignment with cross-piece a. To the ends of these levers the whitiietrees or singletrees are secured, the object of this part of my cultivator being to forma perfect draftequalizer in connection therewith.
In adapting my cultivator as a riding cultivator a modified form oi' mechanism is used in raising and lowering the drag-bars, in that, in lieu of the cam-arm m and the bar m2, I substitute a connecting rod or arm fm, which is pivotally connected to the casingl by means of bolt m8. From this construction it will be seen that when the lever I is adjusted the whole force of the V-shaped spring m is directed or hears against the rod oa", which in turn presses the drag-bar downward. By this construction it will be seen that the time or labor of the driver or operator is not taken up by the need of pressing downward upon the lever or upon the drag-bars, while the machine is adapted for work in undulating ground.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A cultivator having its frame supported upon an approximately-inverted-U-shaped axle, the parallel ends of which are pivotally secured in vertical cylinders of the inverted- T-shaped portions by means of rods projected through horizontally-aligned slots in the sides of the vertical cylinders and through corresponding' orifices in the lower free ends of the U-shaped axle, substantially as shown and described.
2. A cultivator having the invcrted- U- shaped axle and inverted-T-shaped portions pivotally connected by means of rods projected through horizontally-aligned slots in the cylinders of the T-shaped portions and through corresponding orifices in the ends of the U-shaped axle, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a cultivator, the combination, with the shovel-standard and its beam, of the springactuated rod held in a support or guide upon IOO IIO
the under side of the begun and connected to its opposite side, against which and the side the jointed or toggle brace secured to seid beam and standard, substantially as set forth.
4. In a cultivator, the spring-actuated lever I and its casing Z, having the series of orifices in its sides pivoted at its lower end and cerf rying integral therewith the lever or cani-arm m', in combination with the drag-frame and the ber m2, having a projection bearing against the under side of said drag-frame, substantizrily as shown and described.
5. In a cultivator, the spring-lever I, having a pewl t' on one side thereof andthe lug Z3 on of the lever one end of an approximately-V- slieped spring bears, said spring m being coiled at its lower end about e sleeve and having` its other' end bearing against a cross rod or pin m8 in the front of the inclosing-cesing, substantially as shown and described.
