SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,740, dated December 30, 1890. Application filed September 9, 1890. Serial No. 364,427- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWIN D. BANGs, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harvesters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates more particularly to the cutting apparatus of harvesters; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts to be hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings, and subsequently claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a plan view of a portion of a harvester provided with my improved cutting apparatus, certain of the parts being broken away and in section for the purpose of better illustration; Fig. 2, a section taken on lines 2 2 of Figs. 1 and 3; Fig. 3, a section taken 011 line 3 3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a plan of a portion of one form of the endless cutting apparatus, and Fig. 5 a section taken on line 5 5 of Fig. 1.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A represents the frame, B the main drive-wheel, and O the endless platform-apron, of a harvester. Arranged in a bearing D on the harvester-frame is a shaft that carries pinions E F, the first of these pinions being in mesh with the gear on the main drive-wheel B and the other in mesh with a gear-wheel G on a shaft H, that has its bearings on said frame transverse to the line of draft.
Splined on the shaft H are two pinions I J, one of which is set to mesh with a gear-wheel K on a shaft L, that carries a polygonalblock M, this arrangement of parts being best illustrated in Fig. 3.
By means of two, adjustable pinions the rotation of the polygonal block M may be run in either direction, accordingly as one or the other of said pinions is set to mesh with the gear-wheel K on the shaft L, that carries said block.
Another polygonal block N is loosely arranged on a stud O,that engages a recess bin the front timber of the harvestenframe, and laterally extended from the stud through said timber is a rod P, having a spiral spring Q chain from slipping out of place, while at the same time guides d e are arranged on the harvester-frame for the same purpose.
The endless chain is composed of alternate single and double links S T, the single links being pivoted at their ends between the double links. Bolted or otherwise rigidly connected to each link in the endless chain is a triangular knife II, that travels through and cuts against guards V, of the usual construction and arrangement, the single links of said chain being offset, as best illustrated in Fig. 3, to bring the knives thereon in line with those on the double links. As shown in the drawings, the knives U are preferably serrated on their edges to facilitate the cut and to better hold the edge.
In order to improve the travel of the endless chain, it may be found desirable to provide the faces of the polygonal blocks M N with lugs f for engagement with recesses g in the links of said chain, this construction being illustrated in Fig. 4'.
By the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts above described the endless cutting apparatus may be readily adapted to any ordinary harvester, and attention is called to the fact that as the knives cease to out they are traveled back within the plat form-apron C out of the way of the straw, the direction of the cut corresponding to the set of the pinions I I with relation to the gearwheel K on the shaft L, as previously explained.
Having thus described my invention. what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- A harvester cutting apparatus that comprises rotary supports, an endless chain arranged thereon and consisting of alternate pivotall -'-conneeted double and single links, the latter links being ofiset, knives secured have hereunto set my hand, at Milwaukee, in to the links, stationary guards for the knives,
