J. R. LARIBW.
' GOT.
No. 443,712. Patented Dec. 30, 1890.
UNrrnn STATES JOHN R. LARIEV, OF ELMIRA, NEV YORK.
COT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,712, dated December 30, 1890.
Application filed June 20, 1889.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOHN R. LARIEW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elmira, in the county of Chemung and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Cot, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in cots; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved cot. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section.
The side rails A A may be of any desired size and have their ends connected by the cross-rails B B, as shown. On the outer sides of the said cross-rails I provide the brackets or loops O C, which are engaged by the upright arms D, to the upper ends of which the head and foot rails E are secured. The said head and foot rails are thus removably attached to the end rails, as will be readily understood.
The slats F are supported by flanges G on the inner sides of the side rails, and in order to strengthen the slats and also to permit the use of lighter slats I employ a central longitudinal bar G, to which the slatsl are secured, as shown most clearly in Figs. 2 and 3, but which is shorter than the distance between the end rails B, whereby spaces are left at the ends of the bar G for the reception of the locking-arms hereinafter described. The bed-springs H are secured to the upper sides of the slats and have their upper ends secured or joined together by the coiled springs I, so that a level surface is presented to receive the mattress. The mattress is secured permanently to the upper edges of the side and end rails, and consists of the bottom sheath J, the upper sheath or ticking K, and the intermediate filling L, as shown in Fig. 3.
The cot is supported by the legs M, which are connected by the roundsNand have their upper ends pivotally secured to the side rails A. The legs can thus be swung downward to support the cot, or else folded upward against the slats to economize room when the cot is not in use. Then the legs are folded Serial No. 314,939. (No model.)
up against the slats, they are held in their raised position by the buttons O, which are pivoted on the under sides of the slats and are adapted to be turned over the rounds. To the inner sides of the end rails B and near their upper edges I pivot the latches or locking-arms P, the lower ends of which are provided with notches Q, which are adapted to engage the rounds N when the said latches are swung downward, so as to hold the legs in their lowered positions to support the cot. In this their normal position the bodies of the locking-arms rest firmly against the inner faces of the end pieces B, whereby a strong and firm support is given them, and when a weight is placed upon the cot tending to spread the legs the arms l? can the more firmly resist such tendency, because their bodies strike forcibly against said end pieces B. The rounds are somewhat flattened, so as to prevent the locking arms or latches slipping thereon, as shown in Fig. 3. When the locking-arms are raised, they lie within the frame composed of the side and end rails and are prevented from falling by the buttons R, which are pivoted on the lower edges of the end rails and are adapted to be turned over the said locking-arms.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, itvwill be seen that I have provided a cot which is composed of few parts, is simple in its construction, and which can be stored away in a small space when not in use, and when required for use can be easily and quickly set up in position. It will also be seen that the lockingarms swing in a direction at right angles to the movement of the legs. By this means there is no liability of the locking-arms becoming disengaged.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a folding cot, the vertical side pieces A, the inclined end pieces B, and the longitudinal bottom bar Gf, shorter than the distance between said end pieces, whereby spaces are formed at its ends, in combination with the legs M, connected in pairs and pivoted to said Io legs, and said arms when folded standing` [within the bedirame, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as myown I have hereto axed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
JOI-IN R.. LARIEW.
