W. H. KILBOURN. MAGNETO ELECTRIC STOP MECHANISM- No. 443,646. Patented Dec. 30, 1890.
UNire STATE-s Arnrrr much,
lVASHlNGTON H. KILBOURN, OF GREENFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO HERBERT O. EDGEBTON, OF SAME PLACE.
MAGNETO-ELECTRIC STOP MECHANISM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,646, dated December 30, 1890.
Application filed June 4, 1890. Serial No. 354,234. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, VASHINGTON l'I. KIL- BOURN, a citizen of Greenfield, in the county of Franklin and State of Massachusetts, have 5 invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stop Mechanism; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in electric stop mechanism, and is designed more particularly to be used in factories, machine-shops, mills, and like places to stop the supply of power to such machinery, the object of the invention being to produce an apparatus by means of which the supply of power to machinery may be instantaneously stopped from any point in the building in which the machinery is located A further object is to provide an. apparatus by which the supply of power may be cut off from an engine or watcr-wheel with electrical devices, whereby the supply of power may be cut off, said electrical device being capable of manipulation from any part of the building containing the machinery.
A further obj ectis to produce an improved belt-tightencr to be actuated through the 0 medium of electrical appliances.
lVith these objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed 5 out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing the figure is a view of my invention in elevation.
The apparatus is designed to be located in proximity to the supply of power to a waterwheel or steam-engine.
Mounted in suitable bear-in gs at points near the supply of power are two pulleys A B, connected by a normally-loose belt 0, the shaft of one of said pulleys (preferably pulley B) being connected with the valvewhich controls the supply of power, whether the power or motive force be steam, water, or any other source of power. Located in proximity to the v belt C is an upright D, on which a lever E is pivotally supported. At the end of the short arm of this lever a roller F is mounted and adapted to bear against the belt 0, and through the medium of a weight F on the long arm of said lever to tighten said belt when the lever E is operated, as presently explained.
Pivotally connected to the long arm of the lever E, and supported by a suitable bracket G', secured to the lever E, is an upwardlyprojecting bar G, provided at or near its upper end with a hook or projection a. The bar G is adapted to normally engage a detent Z) on a shaft orarbor c, which latter is mounted in suitable supports (5. A spring 6 is coiled about the shaft 0, one end being secured to said shaft and the other end to one of the supports d, whereby the detent may-be returned to its normal position after the bar G shall have been released.
Located on a base-plate 1, having an upright 2, is an electro-magnet 3, and pivotally supported between the uprights 2 is an armature at, adapted to be actuated by the magnet 3. Secured at one end to the armature at is a lever 5, the other end of which is pivotally connected to a horizontal bar (3, said bar passing between two rollers 7 7, between which it is adapted to have a sliding movement, being limited by a collar 8. The free end of the bar 6 is pivotally connected to a lug f) on the shaft. 0.
A foot-lever 11 is secured to the lever E, by means of which to move said lever and parts carried thereby back to their normal positions when desired.
A battery I is included in circuit with the coils of the magnet 3, said circuit extending to any part of the mill, factory, or other place where machinery is employed, and one or more push-buttons or circuit-closers 10 in- 0 cluded in said circuit.
lVhen it is desired to stop the machinery in case of accident or for other reasons, one of the push-buttons will be pressed to close the circuit through the coils of magnet 3, whereby the ar- 5 mature 4 will be attracted and the lever 5 and bar 6 withdrawn, thus moving the detent I) out of the path of the hook a of bar G, whereupon said bar will drop, and through the medium of the weight F the roller F will be made to bear on the band C and tighten it. This will cause the pulleys A B to rotate and the source of power to be shut off. After bar G has left the detent a. said detent will be returned to its normal position by the springs. \Vhen it is desired to again start the mechanism, it is simply necessary to operate the foot-lever, whereupon the belt 0 will be loosened and the bar G moved up and made to engage the detent a, when the apparatus will be again in position to be operated to stop the mecha1usm.
Having fully described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The GOlIllJllliliiOll, with a source of power, of a pulley connected thereto, a driving-pulley, a belt passing over said pulleys, a belttightener, trip mechanism, an electromagnetic device for actuating said trip mechanism, and an electric circuit including the electire-magnetic device and circuit-closers, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a source of power, of a pulley connected thereto, a drivingindley, a belt passing over said pulleys, a pivoted lever carrying a roller to bear on said belt, a bar attached to said lever, a detent to maintain said bar normally elevated, and an electrically-actuated apparatus for manipulating said detent to release said bar, substantially as set forth.
