CAR-COUPLIVNG.
SPECIFICATION "forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,621, dated December 30, 1890.

To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR A` IVILCOX, a citi- Zen of the United States, and a resident of Monterey, in the county of Allegan and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Couplings; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l of the drawings is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section, and Fig. 3 is a detail view.
This invention relates to certain improve-- ments in car-couplings; and it consists in the construction and combination of parts, as will hereinafter appear.
In the drawings, A refers to a draw-head attached to one car and engaging its counterpart on an opposite car. The draw-head has a concave or inwardly-curved forward end,as at a, having marginal flanges a adapted to engage the draw-heads of cars of different height of platform.
B is the coupling-hook, of a curvature about coincident with that of the forward end of the draw-head for facility of action, and seated ina chamber b therein and pivoted to the draw-head, as at b', about centrally of its inner arm.
The inner end of the hook B has upon its 'rear side a lug or offset c, resting against one end of a spring d, suitably placed in the chamber, to exert pressure upon said offset or lug, in order to automatically uncouple or disengage the coupling-hook from its engaging coupling-hook when released, as hereinafter explained.
C is a push-lever having a pivot or swivel connection with the inner end of the couplinghook B, through the clip e and the angle-arm f, said clip being connected to said lever and to said arm, and the arm being pivoted to said hook at the front edge of said end and having a slot g in one portion receiving a stud on the side edge of said end of the hook, thus permitting a limited movement thereof.
The lever C is held in place at its outer end by a guide-pin passing the draw-head Aclose to said lever. The angle-arm f' is cushioned or acted upon bya spring h, suitably secured in position between the latter and .the inner end of the coupling-hook B, the action being to thrust the push-lever C outward.
The lever C has a thumb-like or widened outer end, as at fz', to enable it to squarely receive the engaging end of the approaching or opposite draw-head, to thus cause it to automatically effect the coupling operation.
D is an angle-catch arranged in the chamber l) of the draw-head A and adapted to normally engage the spring-pressed angle-arm f, and thus hold the coupling-hook in its locked or coupled position.
The catch D has an outwardly-extending portion j projecting through an openingj in the side edge of the draw-head and adapted to have connected to it a chain 7c, arranged to extend along the end of the car to a point near one side thereof, and thence tov the roof of the car, to permit the manipulation of the same by a train-man on the ground, without going between the cars, or from the roof or top of the car or on the platform. It will therefore be seen that when the catch is disengaged from the inner end of the coupling-hook the outer hooked end of the latter will be disengaged or uncoupled from the opposite or engaging coupling-hook by the spring d, as before intimated, and that the push-lever C at the same time will be thrown or sprung outward by the spring h acting on the pivoted movable angle-arm f, to which said lever is, as before stated, connected.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,-
l. The car-coupling having the pivoted spring-pressed coupling-hook provided with the push-lever connected to the inner end of said hook, and having its outer end normally standing outward from or beyond the drawhead, and the angle-catch and means for disengaging the same, substantially as set forth.
2. In a car-coupling, the pivoted springpressed angle-arm at the inner end of the coupling-hook, in combination with the anglecatch on the draw-head, engaging said anglearm, substantially as set forth.
3.
